I am dithering over the choice of an OB which I am thinking of storing in my cockpit locker. I read that 4 strokes can lose oil from the sump if not stored upright. Are there any such problems with the Honda 2?

You must lay them down on the correct side or oil will run out of the crankcase vent. I have used these 2 hp Hondas for 14 years and I am pleased with them.

Store it as directed in the handbook (on its starboard side or upright, or I guess anwhere in between those two) and it'll be fine. I have not had a leak from mine in the three years that I've had it, storing it in that way.

I recently bought the Honda 2. I'm impressed with it, although it is certainly noisier than expected (air cooled you see). It is also awkward to use at low revs as the centrifugal clutch doesn't cut in until the revs are relatively high - often too high for low speed dinghy manouvering.

Thanks for the comments. What is the problem with the clutch not cutting in? Does it mean that you cannot easily manoeuvre the dinghy slowly when, say, coming alongside a yacht?

I have had a Honda 2 for several years,
Last year bought the clutch model just takes a bit of getting used to it will control down to any speed you can make it (clutch slip) for want of a better expression.
Bit noisy yes but I would not change mine. I also use it a lot mooring about 1/2 mile from shore.

Because it is a centrifugal clutch, it does not engage until the revs are above tick over. This means you cannot manouvre the boat/dinghy at tickover speed like you would with an ordinary model. One other drawback is that the start position on the throttle means the prop rotates right from start, so have to take care not to foul the prop.
Having said all that, I still think it is a good engine and would recommend it.
