Honda 2.3D outboard drive problem

Leaving the boat on its swinging mooring on Saturday in the dinghy the outboard lost the drive, regained the drive, lost it ....and so on- frightened the life out of me with the incoming spring flood taking me far from where I wanted to go with a fully laden dinghy with the drive coming and going at will. It took twice as long as normal to get to land and I think doubled my grey hairs!!!!

There is no mention in the handbook about the centrifugal clutch or if it can be adjusted/ repaired etc so my question is has anyone had any experience like this and is there a remedy without invoving a Honda dealer at vast expense?
 
Don't know about centrifugal clutches (or Hondas) but it could be the shear pin if the engine is so equipped or the rubber drive hub "spun" if the prop is protected in that way.

Posting the question on the Honda board at iBoats could get you some helpful advice from people who really know about these things.

Let us know the outcome though.
 
You can get at the clutch - it sounds like you may have some slippy stuff in there - but that wouldn't explain why the drive comes back ...

Anyway - to get it apart is basically just a stripdown - there are 3 bolts holding the leg on and then 4 holding the bottom engine cowling on - you'll have to take the top off and I take the fuel tank out as well. You'll also need to take the tiller arm off and the kill/stop button off ...

If you're careful you can get the clutch housing off the bottom (the centrifugal part is on the bottom of the engine) without removing the exhaust ....

One blummin good clean later and you can put it all back again .... I've done ours a couple of times (once per season) and although it is quite tedious, I find the engine to be reasonably reliable and the Centrifugal clutch is excellent
 
The prop is protected with a sheer pin ... when mine went it was total loss of drive - no getting anywhere - that'll teach me to drive it in the mud!
 
So, if I strip down as you say how do I measure if things are worn , need renewal etc. Or is there any adjustment that might make the difference ?

Having the drive work some of thre time tells me that all is not lost ... but how can I be sure
 
Erm - sorry - I'm more of a strip it down, look at it, clean it, put it back together and try again person ... ours is the older 2hp model and not had to replace anything yet ...
 
I am not keen on mine, either, due to the centrfugal clutch. No problems with the engine itself though. Starts easily, so I think that gumming due to old fuel is the likely problem. Agree that running the carb empty after use is the way forward.

I wish i had bought the little suzuki - a nice arrangement with a simple forward/neutral lever.
