I was getting ready to service my Honda 2.3 and decided to remove the cowling as it gets in the way when it hangs from the recoil cord. One recommendation is to remove the recoil mechganism - quite easy just three dome head nuts. However, I thought it would be easier to just remove the recoil handle i.e. undoing the figure 8 knot in the cord that holds the cord within the handle. Big mistake! I didn't restrain the cord properly and it flew back into the internals of the recoil system. It took a good hour to sort it, not helped by the torsion spring flying out and needing to be carefully wound back. Not that easy a task! Anyway, so I still haven't managed to do the service.

Still do not understand why Honda haven't designed the outboard so that the cowling can be removed completely from the engine such as is possible with my Honda 8.

The cowl is the least of the design issues with 2.3hp engines. I was going to try to explain how to repair these recoils but prob easier if I video how to do it which I will attempt later
