I can set the friction on my 2006 Honda 10hp. Instead of the old screw friction adjustment there seems to be another twist grip which I guess is used to provide friction ( some sort of antagonostic twisting may be required) I tried all sorts of twisting and pulling but cant get the throttle to stay set at the required speed.
I cannot locate the correct manual for this model, the 9.9 is similar but but the throttle has a wing nut to set the friction.
Can anyone advise on this type of friction control?
As the engine is in a fixed well position I wonder if I could dispense with the twist grip ( or the whole tiller arm) and fit a simple lever? has anyone else done this?
Grateful for any suggestions!

Ah yes, the friction collar. Delicate little thing, isn't it............as in, you only need to overtighten it just ONCE...........and it's cattle trucked. Guess how I know. I'm still trying to work out how to pull it apart to see what's stripped, broken, fallen out of place or whatever. Great engine (mine's the 8hp version), not so impressive on the ancilliary front. And have you seen what they want for the 'special' plug for connecting the output from the charging coil.......and as for the spares prices, well..................

I have the same set up on a bigger engine, I simply hold the twistgrip still, then twist the collar clockwise (looking from the engine along the tiller arm) it can be ajusted from returning when let go, to fully locked at any speed.
Never had a problem with it.

Thanks guys. We tried everthing including, I guess, holding and turning the knob cloclwise.
No joy, lots of clicking but it wont hold.... why do they invent these complicated systems?
I guess we will have to find a 'way in' to see if it can be repaired.
Fitting a simple lever like on my old seagull begins to sound attactive!!?

I've got the 10hp and funnily enough mine's in a well too!
The twist lock really shouldn't be that hard to lock so i'm guessing yours has had a heavy hand at some point.. It does seem quite fragile.

It's a great engine, though i've already whined about it's weight and amazing lack of grab areas when lugging the thing around.

Yes I did find 'lugging around' difficult especially getting it safely up the ladder and off my shoulder without dropping the pointy bit through the cockpit 'floor'!
I recall my Nigerian dinghy driver, Joel, lifting and carrying our Bearcat 55hp on his head, I thought a 'little' 10hp would be no problem!

Well I think we have the answer. Employ Joel for all Engine lifting. He clearly has a knack for it. :D

The Honda-10 is a great engine just that they seem to have decided to make the cowling nice and smooth which looks nice but is rubbish for moving the thing in and out of wells etc.
