While repeating that I am not a chemist, I do know for a fact that if I leave a brush with solidified paint on it in a jar of water together with a handful of dishwasher powder, the brush will be as good as new after a couple of days.
Solidified polyester resin takes a bit longer.
So I think that it must be the chemical action of the cleanser and not abrasion that does it. Note also that the newer dishwasher tablets have something in them that prevents glassware from becoming opaque, yet are just as effective at removing dirt.
