For people who still have a house (in the UK), and leave it empty for prolonged periods of time, what home insurance do you use? Camping & Caravan club do home insurance that covers trips of 180 days. Any other options?

Not that long, but we’re with Ageas who were happy for us to be away upto 60 days at a time. Obviously not a full season but it did fit in with our plans to return home over the summer this year.

I’m hoping to negotiate longer for next year but, if they don’t go for it, I’ll definitely check out the Camping and Caravanning Club (do you have to be a member?)

We're via GSI, can be away a total 9 months p.a with max single absence of 6 months. Can't remember who underwriter is. Household - Specialists In Home And Motor Insurance - GSI (Southern) (gsi-insurance.com)

Update. Bit of an old thread but may be of interest. Our home insurance renewal via GSI with extended unoccupancy went up by £50 this month to £440 p.a. so looked for alternatives. Home protect quoted £505 and A J Gallagher £272.69, you can guess who I went with. Can be away for 6 months at a stretch and no annual limit.

Can not remember the details but when I retired failed to find suitable cover for leaving the house empty for 6 months or so on line. I went in to a local insurance brokers office. They found me suitable cover at a not greatly increased premium.

Strangely, the underwriters' main concern seemed to be that a tree might damage the roof and wanted a tree surgeons report with all recommendations carried out. There are very few trees and no tree surgeons on the Orkney islands so we pruned our wind stunted trees so they could not cause damage to the house.
