home base harbour for diving on scottish west coast

Bart

If the motorhome picks up your mate from the airport and takes him to the marina to collect your car and trailer, they could then drive in convoy up to Oban.
Sorts out the storage issue in Glasgow and gives you the option to trailer back all the way to Newcastle if you choose.

I'm sure the Scots may be able to suggest other options with local knowledge.

Callum, its more complicated, as there is besides a Car + boat, and a motorhome, another car with a trailer with diving stuff,

but nevertheless, plans have slightly changed;
none of the mates are going to fly, so we're all together, and in order not to have some of the group waiting one day, me going through the Crinan canal, we will drive all together, and go by road all the way to Oban,

plans for the return trip will be made when we are in Oban... (one mate is flying from Glasgow, the day before we have the ferry in Newcastle)
but also here, plans might change.

many thanks to the Scots for their usefull advice , including a few PM's !!!

A couple of years ago, AlistairR from this forum gave me some very useful and precise advice on getting from Glasgow airport to the A9.
After arriving from a long-haul flight, feeling a bit vague, it was re-assuring having some local knowledge printed out on a sheet to read from.

Hope all goes well Bart :)

what currency do you have over there ?
somebody told me that Scottish pound is different from Britisch pound ?

The Scottish banks print their own notes, but they are legal tender anywhere in the UK (try telling that to a small shop keeper in England when all you have is Scottish notes)

We also take English notes up here :)

There is a Scottish pound, but its value is the same as the English one, and both are legal tender in Scotland. If you get change for English money, it will tend to be Scottish, but again has exactly the same value, and equally legal in all the UK. Some small businesses in England, may give you a hard time with Scottish money, but any bank will accept it.

For our Scottish forum friends, are Scottish notes harder to get out of your wallet? I do note that my Scottish relatives have much shorter arms than ours south of the border.

is there a good slibway somewhere around Oban ?

just found there is one in Dunstaffnage marina,

any advice about parking for the motorhome ?
camping site in close proximity of one of the harbours ?

last year we were lucky , could stay with the motorhome on the marine parking (was officially not allowed, but a friendly smile, ....)

don't dare to asc the marina via the phone, is defenitly a no go I'm afraid

I'd have kept quiet about your knuckles being closer to the ground, best to let Bart believe we Brits are all equal.. lol

I am sure that they'd let you park near the marina on Kerrera ... Believe there is a car ferry crossing on South side of the Island. Car safe and not as expensive as Dunstaffenage.

one of the friends/partners is a non diver,
she would like to go to explore the country side on her own,

therefore, shouldn't we better choose Dunstaffenage ?
any idea about camping parking ?

Personally I would stock up on good Belgium chocolates and invite the marina manager along to one of your impressive lunches or dinners....he'll be like putty in your hands :D

I'm not sure if he would still be like putty if we have a few of these locally catched lobsters on our grill, :D
as everybody knows that divers are not allowed to take anything from the sea :o

Would you wear a dry suit Bart? The surface water temp. must be close to it's maximum currently?

Have you done any research into what the area produces in the way of available shell-fish and scale-fish, or are you just going for the UW scenery and if the occasional fish ends up on the BBQ it's just a bonus :)

Yes but I guess that this is still no more then 15°C, so for sure I will wear a dry suit

actually I've done almost no research about the area, dive spots, underwater live, ... just a minimum to get us on the water.
was rather bussy with other things the last few months :)

we have a berth in Dunstaffenage Marina,
and the motorhome is here on the parking.
great !!!
Harbour master is very relaxed, no fuss, no trouble, ...
and gave lots of good advice about the diving

today was beautifull weather, we did 2 dives,
and a Lunch breack with the boat in Oban.

wind prediction for tomorrow is ok,
so we planned a long cruising towards Col, and 2 dives in that area, one dive is on wreck Tapti

for dinner tonight they are preparing about 80 scallops (our catch of the day) on the BBQ
mmmmmm
