She arrived and was duly lifted out onto her blocks .....

All the fuss and organisation came to a successful conclusion ..... and I must be the happiest boater alive .....

There she is in front of the house ... electric connected, frost heaters in place, all the goodies emptied out and she's ready for cleaning, painting, polishing etc.

Well done! I hope you are going to let us know all about sailing in that area of the Baltic. I've read what's his name's books about sailing there before the war [the one who married Trotsky's secretary!] but I'd like to know what it's like nowadays.

swoon, have you had a traumatic experience to so change your ways? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Crew ?? I have various offers of boats / berths .....

So not a problem ...

As to cleaning her up .... she's had plenty years sitting wasting in UK while I earn a crust out here ... so it's time she had some care and attention ....

Not only will the hull be compounded, decks re-painted etc. - but engine most likely removed, stripped and rebuilt.

There's quite a list to do on her ... so it will be an on-going list !!

Sailing over here ? There are 2 bridges downriver from me, which will mean lowering mast to get out ... but as I have access to the marina on "friendly terms" I can move her out and moor up for periods reducing mast-work to min.

SWMBO and I are still in a state of shock .... difficult to believe we really have boat here ...

The trucking co. really did a grand job .. and looked after her throughout.

Next project !! is to truck out my Summer Mobile from UK and put by the river as a summer house ..... with decking out into the water ... that's planned for next early summer. The boat will then lay alongside the decking !!!!!!

So, that looks like a good time for a meet somewhere.

Perhaps you could get SHoutin' to lend a hand?

Nah, I'm told he's asked Santa for a hearing aid, so he'll be all whistles and sqawks next season.

No change then . . .

Chuggin ... you are one sad specimen

You don't take any hints at all ...

I seriously suggest you consider counselling ... as there must be a cure for your condition ... or is a serious dunking of the end of Pepe's pontoon the only solution ?

Oh BTW - Shoutin-aloud is the "name" for YOU .... not me !!!

Are you taking Arthur Ransome's name in vain?

Strangely I've just sent an e-mail off to and American blogger who visited Rusland Church this year. (where Arthur and Evgenia are buried)

Re: Crew ?? I have various offers of boats / berths .....

Nice project for the winter. Mind you, will you have to dig a tunnel throught he snow?
Do you swindleries out there or will most stuff have to be shipped?

Winter ...

Yep .... but I have heaters etc. already plugged in and working ...

B&Q .... yep B&Q .... £9.99 garage Frost protection jobs 200W each .... excellent compact jobs ... Have two of those + 1 Dimplex 500W Coldwatch heater .... boat already is like summer inside !!

Intention is to use wood and plastic piping ... to form arches and frame over her - using stanchions / pulpit/ pushpit as base fixings .. then a cheap blue tarp over ... enough to allow us to get on and in ...
Majority of work will be done once winter ends ... as paint etc. is no good at temps we get winter etc.

Interesting item has come to light .... as my boat has rarely been out of the water in UK ... (I bought her end of '98) ... this time when lifted there were a few small areas of old crusty anti-foul flaking off ... That's what it appeared as ... but in fact is a thin layer of extra gel-coat .... that explains why I have always had strange meter readings on the hull when I've made checks ... It appears that previous owner or before has tried to coat over gloss gel-surface without keying it !!

Anyway Diesel Eng'r will be on board this weekend .... suss out recon the engine ...

Forgot to add ..... the cost of crane etc. at this end ... was £25 an hour ... total fee paid for work was £38.
When she goes back in in 2007 ... we will pay about £50 - 80 total .... lift onto flat-bed truck, drive to lift point ... lift into water ...

Can't lift in at house yet - as need to dig out and concrete a slipway etc. - another project for next year .... I already have the rail track lines to bolt down for running a "trolley" on ... I have a small trolley for the 5.5m weekender ... just have to make a heavier one for SA ...

The boat now is spurring us on to get things moving with house repairs and canal dredging ... plans are that within 3 yrs. we should be finished and able to enjoy it all .... sit out on the large balcony looking out over the 2 boats and river ... summer house and decking etc. down at canal ...

We've both worked hard for it ... still am ! so I don't feel selfish or smug about it ... just happy that Svet and I can do it !!

Small request ... If anyone has Hornby OO train gear or Scalextrix stuff .... - I'm interested ... it's an indoor winter project I have .... I have a large room unused that is destined to have layouts ... we never grow up !!

Swindlers ?

There is limited in Riga and one in Tallinn ... most is mail-order .....

But what I do is grab hold of fabricators in the ports where we work and give them a drawing etc. Beauty of which - it is designed exactly for the job and your boat ....

eg : Mainsheet horse (stainless steel sheet rail for transom), with inverted U brackets made to fit by bolting through transom etc. £6 ....
Outboard bracket for transom in sliding rails ... £5

OK - there are various items that have to be ordered ... so mix of mail-order / make locally.

When it comes to engines ... often they will modify or make parts ...

Snow .... not worried about that ... as I don't intend working on her during that weather !!

Re: Superski Annaski?

Are you going to rename the boat and create a new SBC yacht club now that you have plans for the pontoon and hospitality room?

EDIT Please feel free to make us all jeolous with lots of piccies of uncrowded Baltic sailing.Well done Nigel /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Any idea why, Nigel, I thought it must be gel coat as the two adjascent surfaces were so smooth. It couldn't have been keyed in properly. let me know what the engine problem was.

Blow the three years, mate, I want to come over next year /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
