Got a shock on our first trip out from Holyhead and still within the outer harbour area past the aluminium jetty to see a rock protruding from the water that I had not seen on our charts.

What level of chart do I need to have this shown up/identified?

Obviously we have a lot to learn (before comments to that effect come in!!!!).

As in paper charts?-I know our house isnt on a commercial mapping programme based on Ordnance Survey-a mere 150 years old!

Best thing would be to post the chart number, then we can look in the relevant catalogues (or locals would already know) and tell you whether there's a more appropriate chart.

Just checked the Admiralty harbour chart. Cannot see any drying rocks in the harbour.
The one marked on my C-Map 93 turns out to be Foul Ground, but for some reason, C-Map have notated it Rock.
The only real shallow bit is on the Outer Platters in the new harbour, but that is well marked by buoys.

I was outside the main part of the harbour on the east side of the aluminium jetty.

I was busy trying to unravel the genoa furling line which badly tangled when the wind dragged the genoa out when we were only intending to let about one third out when the rock (as I perceived it) appeared about 50 metres ahead, protruding about half a metre out of the water. My charts are still on the boat but I am sure that I need a larger scale version (and much better planning rather than go for a potter round which is what we were doing).

Are you sure it wasn't the remains of the shipwreck ( it was called the "Osmand" or something like that). That protrudes at low water and looks like quite a nasty triangular outline rock ( it used to be a lot bigger and excellent fishing ; Pollack up to around 12lbs in the early 70's, untill the Royal Navy blew it up to make it "safe". Or maybe the Nimrod rocks?

Sounds like that is what it was as my son looked at our chart and there was a wreck in the vicinity but I didn't believe it! And it was triangular.

Thanks for the responses.

What can be confusing is some of the charts, including my latest Garmin one show the outline of a ship rather than the conventional wreck symbol.
