"They rust from the inside out".
I've heard that before many times and now I've seen it.I've got a 20-30? years old steel boat and every hollow section I have opened is rotting from the inside ,so once all repaired I intend to fill every thing with some sort of rust inhibitor, and preferably something that does not disolve Jotamastic 87.
Has any body got any advice on that? Any suggestion most appreciated.

Maurice.

Oil.

Oil is the usual inhibitor used in enclosed mild steel. I don't think the grade matters, I use ordinary engine oil, the cheapest available. I've toyed with the idea of reusing old oil for this purpose.

If your yacht has been properly made, hollow parts of the keel, skeg, rudder whatever etc should have been fitted with means to get the oil in and out. I wouldn't put oil anywhere that isn't fully enclosed, for fear of the mess in a knockdown.

It is of course important that the steel is properly primed and rust is not already established.

I have tried WAXOYL in the past and found it to be excellent. It is available in various size cans including a small aerosol for trial purposes. Large - 5ltr ish cans with spray applicators available. Try your local motor factors
