Hi there,

A very new member here, but recently purchased a Pegasus 800, and fancied a trip to Holland for a long weekend.

I'm based at orford & wondered if anyone had any advice on where to go & what to watch out for!

Welcome to the forum. Holland is a fairly easy trip from Orford, about 20 hrs I would think so you have to plan your route carefully. I always aim for Breskens as you can get in easily at all states of the tide and at night. Then the next day across to the inland waterways. You need up to date charts as buoys etc are moved/changed regularly. Make sure you have all the relevant paperwork, crew list, Dutch Almanac(compulsory) etc etc. Choose your weather carefully, if it gets rough it can be very uncomfortable in the North sea. Others will be on to give more info. Get the Imray North Sea crossing route book and Dutch inland waterways. Good Luck, your Pegasus 800 should be fine, I regularly did it in a Jaguar 27.
 
For a short trip I second Breskens marina as a convenient landing point and then into the canal as suggested at Flushing (Vlissingen) for the shortish trip to Middleburg where you can moor in the town centre at e.g. the Arne marina alongside the superb old merchants houses.
If you use Open CPN you can download this years Dutch inland waterways charts (ENC) free of charge or more conveniently you can buy the ANWB Wateratlas 'Z' covering the Zeeland province,including the West Scheldt estuary.It is probably better to buy one here so that you are not tied in to the chandlers opening hours and you can plan ahead. There is a chandlers at Breskens but a much much better one called Jos. Boon at Middleburg.You are also supposed to carry the Dutch Police inland waterways Regulations ( the ANWB Wateralmanac Part 1) which happily can be in free downloadable electronic form or otherwise around £20 in paperback ( its all in dutch but is anyway mandatory).I believe there is now an app. which gives it in english.You do not need an ICC certificate for the dutch inland waterways unless you can exceed 13 knots etc. or have a larger vessel.
Part 2 of the ANWB Wateralmanac is pretty useful if venturing further,as it lists all marinas,bridge openings etc etc.
I could post you a spare 2013/2014 Wateratlas Z ( I was given it) if you want to see what it shows,and it would probably do for that limited trek.

How long is your long weekend?

I'll go along with Petitefleur, the North Sea can be deceptively Lumpy - and at this time of year you may be waiting for a weather Window.A South Westerly out of the Channel gives a long Windy Fetch Having said that, Holland is great, great people and great cruising - you can't help but enjoy .....

The other option is or are NV Charts, now available from UK outlets and Imray, they include a free downloadable Chart and Nav program

Really kind of you all, thank you. I think we're planning on spending three nights in Holland; so a bit more than a "long weekend " !

If you're heading for Breskens or Vlissingen, be sure to work the tide in the Wester Scheldt right - you don't get many hours of the flood and you certainly don't want to fight a spring ebb. On the other hand, you get many hours of ebb to help you home on a Breskens - Harwich passage. Really, the choice of crossing depends on which bit of Holland you want to see. Middelburg is a lovely town and, if you have only a weekend, it may be worth locking in at Vlissingen on arrival and stopping at the "inside marina" (forget its name) at the beginning of the canal. That way you'll get more time in Middelburg. Breskens has little of merit to see imho.

The alternatives to the Wester Scheldt ar the Oster Scheldt, where you lock in to Roompot or Ijmuiden where there is an easy access marina before the lock or, if short of funds, you can lock in and tie up for a sleep alongside the canal. From Ijmuiden It's a short trip along the Nordsee Kanal to the centre of Amsterdam where berthing is still way cheaper than in the UK. If you have more time, it's just one lock from Amsterdam to the inland cruising delights of the Markermeer and Ijsselmeer, which kept us entertained all this summer. You can get to Amsterdam from Vlissingen using the Stand Maast route, but it will take you 3 or 4 days even if you push with no stopping to enjoy.

Harwich - Ijmuiden should fit comfortably inside 24 hours with no serious navigational challenges. Best plan to arrive in daylight your first time so you can see the gas fields and wind farms off the Dutch coast.

IMO a w/e is too short i have done a number from Ramsholt to Oostende & back in September in my 800. leave friday after lunch & back in the Arms for a pint Sunday.
It can take a few hrs to transit the Walcheren Canal

I just purchased a Jaguar 27 and trying to track down previous owners as the boat does not have much history, i found lots of Dutch charts on board so reaching out to people, it has a Beta 10, lived in Harwich for some some time, no chance it could have been the boat you used ?
 
you will need to fill in a FAL 5 form before departure and email it to Dutch immigration with you arial place to clear customs and get your passports stamped Dutch immigration are very accommodating
