While pondering the situation re massive financial drain's on local council's funds I think I may have a solution.
As we all know most raggies stay in harbour and use the local amenities as every home does. I'm considering asking my local councillor to forward a motion at the next meeting which means boats like this are treated as holiday homes . At least this way the local community wont have to subsidise the elite few who can, I'm sure afford to pay .
Quite frankly this situation has gone on for far to long it's about time people accepted their responsibility to help pay for the local amenities where they keep their holiday homes. Holiday homes pay half the rate of tax compared to people who live there so it's not to bad.

Excellent idea. I must admit I really sympathise with those local economies that are forced to exist by tourism and rather than extort the money in an underhand way throuh tacky goods and substandard food,t hey should just come up front with it and add it onto the moorng fees.

Added benefit would then be that it would be less difficult to cost justify to the family a holiday in the med.

Hi Mick

Just read your post whilst in Spain and I´think that for those already paying high marina fees in the UK to then be subject to extra taxes is pushing things a bit. Arent these items already covered by the fees charged by the marina.

Currently in Barcelona a 10 mtr berth for 12 months including water and electrcity on a 20 amp supply is 2100 Euros about 1400 pounds. They want to attract business over here not drive it away.

Caravans have to pay so why should yacht's that just sit there get away with it.
If you take an average of 30 at £300 that's £9000 which is council tax being avoided.
The marina or harbour pay rates and charge you to keep your holiday home but so do caravan parks and the owners still pay council tax .
Take a local council, in a place like Southampton and then add it up, it must be hundreds of thousands then consider what improvements could be made with all that lost annual revenue.

Don't think mobile caravans pay, just static ones FWICR, same argument for boats I believe.

Only have to pay council tax if lived in all year, many static sites kick residents off for 6-8 weeks a year in order to prevent payment.

you are all right though, I don't pay enough taxes to this tax and waste government, the more the merrier, have you never heard of the English civil war.

I seriously worry about this country.

Excellent idea. While they're at it they could insist on us "logging" out and in, so they know whether we are at home, or on the boat square hulled...Shouldn't take the Marinas/Harbour Authorities long to make the returns each month. Probably only cost the Councils a few hundred thousand to administer it.

It may be true of stinkpots but all the raggies I know go to sea. They might stay in harbour at night, but not their "home".
