looking for an easy to drill plastic sheeting which i can sikka seal onto GRP
does not have to be transparent
will drill through it to screw it down
def nothing brittle, don't want it cracking
will oversize the holes and use penny washers to hold it down

whats the easiest plastic to work with both for drilling and chamfering the edges
final finish is not relevant as it is hidden

tnx

I'd use nylon as it is easy to work and is not brittle.
Where would get a small piece from? I'd look in a scrap bin at Plastic Jobber site

I use HDPE sheet for the access hatches in both my fuel tanks and water tanks.

Easy to cut and drill with wood working tools.

The only issue is that sikaflex will not stick so I use a rubber type foam strip as a sealent clamped with screws of bolts through to compress the foam strip

I have just finished a project using UPVC soffit offcut stuck with Evo-Stik Sticks Like Sh*t. In the past I have used household chopping board but whatever plastic material they use, it won't stick with Sikaflex or equivalent.

Nothing but nothing sticks to "chopping board" plastic which is almost always polyethylene. If non-structural I'd use a bit of UPVC.

Most chopping boards are HDPE. However, you CAN get Sika to stick if you...
  • Clean.
  • Sand rough.
  • Flame-treat to denature the surface.
  • Use Locktite PL S30 or S40 instead of Sika 295 (bondss better to PE). It's also half the price (Home Depot or Lowes).
This is not well known and really does work. I have 10 year old patches on a koy pond I just inspected a week ago. Still perfect after 10 years underwater.

That said, I don't like PE as a material for most things. It's a poor structural material. I would probably use fiberglass, possibly Lexan. You really didn't tell us what it was for.

sealing up an access hole to the hydraulic pumps, area does get flooded when choppy
i have used a plexiglass sheet before, 15mm or something like that
sealed just fine with sikka and a few screws but cracked
sikka did not stick to that particularly well either
might have cracked due to not leaving enough play in the screw holes ?

anyway, don't really need to see into it, so will go with the HDPE sheeting
should i rough up the edges to get a decent seal ........
yes i will use some screws to keep it in place

If there is a possibility of having to remove the cover seal it in a way that makes it east to remove and seal again like a foam rubber gasket.
