... having done hard labour in the garden on saturday was invited by ra missus for a sail to cowes and go to the garden festival at queen victoria's osborne house on sunday. no wind of course and the festival was cancelled because of rain last week .. humph ..

whilst mooching around osborne saw that the old girl had a penchant for having her offsprings feet and hands sculpted. very macabre ....

but, what's growing in the soilent? nevere seen so much brown muck. the sea is almost black. sunsail emptying their tanks?

don't bother looking for a water taxi in cowes after 3pm on sunday .....

the old bat had a railway track laid to get her down to the 'machine' .... think the 'plumbing' was otherwise ok ....

she wouldn't want to swim in those waters in the state they are in ...

I also noticed there was loads of brown muck all over the place. I sailed from osborne bay to bembridge ledge and there was muck was everywhere. It defininately looked like some ship had emptied it's holding tank in the Solent.

Put me off going for my first swim of the year!!

I was "drifting" off Ryde yesterday and as you say big "clouds" of brown stuff which seemed to break up as we passed through them.

I certainly wouldn't have wanted to dive in. but the lovely sunshine made up for it.

A little more wind next time please!

I sent a message to the Portsmouth QHM to see if they were away of any shops emptying their holding tanks. Got the reply

"sorry, I know how annoying (and illegal) this is but we have received no reports over the weekend. Rgds QHM"

I wonder how the culprits are found out??

this stuff has found its way into portsmouth harbour eg northern end of campers where there isn't much tidal flow.

I think you'll find its the final death throws of the May bloom. I went fishing from Ramsgate on Friday and its right out to the Falls but as soon as you cross over to the other side the water is crystal clear. It will all be gone in a couple of weeks.

Re: Ryde was the culprit

its either weed or plankton or combination ... ?

i did think this was a more likely reason than ryde pulling the plug on the lord mayor's turd factory or perhaps the blooming stuff likes ryde's faeces ... ugh, enough, enough ....

Re: Ryde was the culprit

It's plankton which suddenly gets a breeding spurt on as soon as the water heats up in May. It lasts for about 3-4 weeks and as it dies some falls to the sea bed and some lays on the surface. Towards the end of its life it gathers into smelly brown balls of the stuff. For what is worth it happens all over the world as we come out of winter into spring.
