Fitting a holding tank this winter and wondered if anyone could tell me if the following would work. Run all waste to a holding tank which will be in forpeak below anchor locker but above water level. Have the normal sea cock turned off when in use (ie. marina / anchorage), hopefully when out at sea it will drain by gravity / or sea water pull (will it?) when sea cock is then opened. OR does anyone know a reason why sea water would enter the tank? Trying to make it as simple as poss with limited space. I would hopefully be able to leave this SC open when at sea.
Ciao Steve

Tried similar arrangement - & I think this system is used in some older Dehlers Had a simple in line tank, above toilet & therefore water level, when at sea just kept normal seacock open so eveything "ran thro" - that was fine; however when sea cock closed and tank used to hold waste the paper all seemed to go down the pipe and block the seacock with everthing else above it...................VERY MESSY TO CLEAR & I now dont have a holding tank!!!!!!!!!

Lotsa info on this in recent thread(s), tho I don't think having a tank as low as you're suggesting was proposed.

Anyway, watch out, the Headmistress will open fire soon, give or take a Time Zone. Don't be fright - she is an expert on the subject.

Hi Swagly...I fitted a holding tank to my boat this year..and posted a thread on 12 June on this forum..If you search my user name you will find it,or perhaps some kind forumite more clued up than me will post a link . The tank is fitted as you describe ,but must be as high above water level as poss.. otherwise cr*p won't run out when you open the seacock. Also, try to keep pipe runs as short as poss. ,you say that you plan to fit the tank in the forepeak, where is this in relation to your heads? A long horizontal pipe run is not a good idea.My tank fits in a locker adjacent to and above the W.C. ,and is directly above the seacock. When this is opened, the tank can be heard emptying with great gusto!!. Don,t put paper or anything" non-passed" down the loo,and you won,t get any blockages. PM Me if You want any advice.

My holding tanks are much the same as yours with a good staight fall to the seacock. Discharge works fine, and I do allow paper to be used. I buy paper made to dissilve quickly. This is sold in caravan shops for use with chemical toilets, and works in my heads without clogging.

Thanks everyone for the info. Y I saw the article in PBO and actually have a similar complete caravan toilet jic. Could use this as directed in the article but not sure how one would empty it without "overspill"? Presume one (me /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif) takes the pipe off at the stop valve and tries not to spill it??
