I have a Shrimper 21 bought in 2017 brand new and it came with a holding tank. This was compulsory due to the RCD. Cornish Crabbers made a very good job of installing it in one of the forward lockers. I think a retrofit would be tricky but not impossible.

Not a Moody. I fitted a 50 litre tank to my Sadler 34. Gravity tank saves a lot of pipework, valves and effort. 50 litres is perfectly adequate for two people, especially if you can arrange a diverter so that pee goes straight out. Look at the Tek-tanks website, they may have one for your boat.

Our 60l tank is an original fitting. It is a simple gravity-fed system and works well. Apart from the outlet seacock, there is only a T-piece in the outlet pipe which leads up to a 'seacock' valve and the tank. In normal use, the outlet is open of course, and the tank valve either open or shut. If it is desired to use the tank, the outlet is closed and the tank opened. To drain the tank, the seacock is opened, and it is usual to follow this by flushing the tank with fresh seawater.

I fitted my 30 year old Frances 26 with one. WHY ?

Once I saw the children paddling at the waters edge of the golden beaches of Salcombe.

How come there are so many boat without holding tanks in UK?
I´ve bought quite a few and imported to Sweden and also arranged transport for approximately 30 more
Boats like Princess, Fairline, Windy etc year range 1997-2005 size 28-40 and almost all of them was missing a holding tank
Does people never use the toilet at the marinas or do they just think that the tide water will flush it?

I never felt the need for a holding tank in the UK as anchorages were rarely full of swimmers so the loo could be used without being offensive and I personally spent most nights in marinas. But I find them essential in the Med as the early morning loo and swim would be unpleasant and we spend most nights at anchor ( and of course with no tides and mostly windless mornings even the coffee grounds are still by your boat an hour later.

Has Rupert said , in the Med there are a must , our heads have holding tank the valve are always set to go into the tanks , that way they not forgotten , once we are well away for land it gets pumped out , as for grey water pumped in tot same tank , if we did that our tank would be full in no time at all , our grey water goes over board ,

The tank for the aft heads has been made to measure out of stainless steel, and fitted inside the hanging locker in the aft cabin. The loss of storage space has not been a problem in our case, we use the sea-berths for storing our clothes etc, and I never understood why one would need to hang things up on a boat:do you know anyone who sails in a dinner-jacket/partyfrock?

Anyway, back to our holding tank: the main body of our aforementioned aft tank is above the waterline, and the outlet is just below the waterline, which makes it VERY easy to empty: just open the cupboard door and turn the seacock open, and WHOOSH! gravity does the rest.

1) Heavens, don't people dress properly anymore. Surely you insist on your crew wearing white flannels and other gentlemen aboard wearing their blazers?

2) Holding tank. You forgot the most important bit about draining the gravity holding tank. No-one should look at the water astern during the draining/flushing. It will disturb you forever...

I wonder how long it will be before I need to look closely at fitting a holding tank. What with Plymouth sound now being a National Marine Park (apparently it happened at the weekend, I thought it was going to happen next year). If you look at the planned expansion for the next couple of years it'll cover Bolt Head - Polperro (nearly) and all the way out to the Eddystone (give or take). No plans yet to restrict grey or black water discharge (or pumping of bilges etc) that I've seen, but I have a feeling it'll come.

As far as I am aware nobody on earth requires grey water holding tanks. They are virtually impossible on a smallish yacht, as the capacity would need to just about equal that of the fresh water tanks. Turkey tries to control grey water in that they make a fuss if soap suds are seen discharging, while turning a blind eye to commercial gulets discharging black water in almost every anchorage they visit. It seems highly unlikely that the UK government will require retrofitting of black water tanks any time soon.
