Hi we are about to start using our holding tank for the first time ever.
Do we need to prime it with chemicals or ‘stuff’ from someone else’s holding tank to get it started, like priming a septic tank or a cesspit.
Thanks.

No, it's just a tank that will be emptied frequently. There is no biological action. You don't need to do anything with either a cesspit or a septic tank. Your personal discharges contain plenty of the required bacteria.

Thanks for the info.

I use a dose of this into the toilet after the tank has been emptied and before using the toilet.

It seems quite economical . No odours and no need for extra chemical to be added other than after each pump out.
I like it better than the previous toxic stuff that I had been using.

Thanks I’ll give a try. I was concerned about the possible smell having been on boats with smelly holding tanks.
What do you add after a pump out?

We do nothing at all. The tank is vented and is presumably dry during long periods when it is not used. The important thing with a steel tank is to flush it out well if it has been used for urine, but this may be good practice anyway. I value my wallet too much to be bothered with chemicals.

Sorry if I had not made it clear
I use a dose of Odourlos into the toilet after the tank has been emptied and before next use of the toilet. No other activity is necessary.

I think you are on the right track. Many people would agree with me that Peggy Hall is the expert on marine toilets. (I will certainly follow her advice)

Peggy Hall would not approve of chemicals.
