For those of you who served on her .... or use her as a navigation mark /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif ..... I've been watching them take off the heavy mooring chains today ready for a 9 a.m. move to North West Wall ? .

I guess that this is prior to going to the scrappy /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: HMS INTREPID moving tomorrow.

Yep, first HM ship that you come to where the channel splits for Portchester or Fareham.

Re: HMS INTREPID moving tomorrow.

Could not be that, they move it from time to time to do essential maintenace.

Re: HMS INTREPID moving tomorrow.

Thanks for that.

I use the ship as guide to 'time to start getting fenders etc ready'.

Saw lots of tugs this morning, but thought they were with the 'Manchester' on the cranes.

Re: HMS INTREPID moving tomorrow.

Yes they were but then Moorhen turned up and the crew started to beat the cr*p out of the mooring chains on Intrepid.

Re: HMS INTREPID moving tomorrow.

COULD be but they often have work crews aboard doing things so not sure why they would move it just for that. Could be wrong. I have seen pics. of its sister ship, Fearless, being stripped in Belgium(?) and that was taken away from the mooring just the once.

From the normally very reliable www.ais-live.co.uk:

"The project headed by Mr. Stuart Halsey involves towing the Intrepid to the Canada Dock in Liverpool for disposal. Final preparations are underway and it is expected that the Intrepid will leave Portsmouth on September 10th - possibly around 8-9 am"

The website has more information.

Re: HMS INTREPID moving tomorrow.

they have taken it alongside in portsmouth for a couple of days on a few occasions before, something to do with the engines I think. One of the guys I used to work with had served on it and seemed to know what was going on.
Sounds like it could be going for good now though.

Been on Intrepid and Fearless whilst serving with the Royal Signals. Always had a great time and they certainly were not "Dry Ships" Slept on the deck in Antigua with the rest of a comms troop and ended up bitten by mozzies... Great memories. Always have a little chuckle as I sail past from Fareham.....

Re: HMS INTREPID moving tomorrow.

Too many years ago I was on HMS Centaur when she was an accommodation ship. We had a crew of about 100 I think and were towed from Portsmouth to Plymouth to cater for the Eagle which was the last crew to use our services. After which we spent time clearing things out likes of the Galley stores etc before being taken up to the trot. About 20 of us used to go out each day and remove kit that was requested by naval store for emergency repairs to active vessels and just to act as ship keepers. A group of 6 of us got to take two ships, The Camperdown and I think one of the old Daring class to the breakers yards in Rosyth and Faslane. We were on board in case the tow broke and they needed to get her back under control.

Jeeezzz....makes me feel bloody old! I was in the mob when Fearless and Intrepid came into service! Lived on Centaur for a while too, was on Victorious when she was gutted by fire before transferring to Hermes. All my old boats have now gone to the scrapheap, or used for target practice etc. Now the Navy is to be cut by a third again......gone is the greatest sea power in the World.

As a kid I used to live a "few doors down" from where BAV34 lives now and I still miss that view.
Ships I can remember blocking my view of Tipnor from Priddys Hard include, Victorious, Bulwark, Belfast, assorted Daring class destoyers, RFAs, and Townsend Thoresen ferries.
Never thought I would be sailing my own boat past the scrap alley. Saw the Manchester, and Glasgow this Summer as I drifted up the Harbour.
What is the old supply ship up towards Quay Lane? I'm sure that was there when I lived there?

Belfast was my first ship after coming out of Collingwood as a baby electrician. I can remember trying to get to the galley for lunch/dinner before the cockroaches got to it. UGH. Quite a few of the old hands got peed off when a pal and I got drafted to Singapore to join the old wooden 'ton class coastal minehunters and sweepers for 15 months. I went up to Hong Kong and eventually Japan and Korea. not bad for a coastal boat! I was offered a berth on one of the sweepers coming back to the uk via Aus and the US as I shared the name of the boat as did the skipper and the squadron MAA.
