It has all gone very pear shaped. Managed to land ********** on a rock today in Falmouth Bay whilst gently chugging looking for a spot to drop the anchor. Got off okay but smacked the prop badly so had to get a tow in. Plan at the mo is prop of tomorrow then back to get the car then prop repair then prop back on then off again. Argghhhhhhhhh. All ok though, thats the main thing, and the experience (and lessons learned of course) grows yet again. Sigh."

Yep, its me. 0830 Monday and waiting to speak to alan Pollard at Vecta Marine to see if he can fit us in tomorrow.

As the story tells, gently nosing in and out of several spots in Falmouth Bay (see last months YM on anchorages) to find a sheltered spot, and saw several sunk rocks so reversed out quickly and moved on. Another yacht was anchored up next to a pleasant looking spot but again saw 2 underwater lurkers - went round again, then crunch. Nothing too serious and had planned to arrive on a risiing tide anyway, so plan was to sit it out, float off and away we go again. Wash though bounced us rather hard once or twice and so prudence took over and I called the CG just to let them know where we were, what we were up to etc. The mention of 4 children on board sparked off the lifeboat discussion and in fact I called the CG back a few minutes later to inform them we had floated off. Unfortunately I then had to call them back to let them know we had lost drive and experience told me it was either something wrapped round the prop (or with hindsight a damaged prop). They came out to tow us in to Falmouth and here we sit in Port Pendennis Marina. I had a dive under last night and indeed one of the blades has been smacked and wedged. There is a diver coming today to do a job on another boat so prudence says grab him for an underwater inspection, whip the prop off, get it to Vecta for repair asap and back to the original plan. One of the kiwi blades has had its tip removed and has been turned on its shaft and wedged solidly in position.

Weather has been unkind on this holiday so far, and this aint helping either !

Watch this space ........

Cheers Jim. Distance/logistics etc says that Vecta for a repair/service/balance would be the best way to go but I too will pick up a spare blade and pin tomorrow. As the chap in the rather nice looking Rustler 42 in front of us pointed out, thats another advantage with the kiwi, that individual blades can be replaced if needs be. Ho hum ......

My spare is one that I thumped, and Vecta faired it off and made it look nice. Tough stuff the blades are made from.

Locking screws and nut off but diver cant remove prop so lift out arranged for later today .... maritime museum here we come to kill a few hours.

Bummer!

We're back in St Peter Port awaiting the nasty weather forecast for tomorrow... and then off to the West Country..... after 10 days of bashing into SW'ly, we are pleased to be heading north again... only the forecast is now for NW'lies for the next week.... arghhhhhhh!

On the positive side... I can confirm the anchorages on Sark and Herm are just utterly utterly fabulous!

This is what happens when you forsake good east coast mud for hard rocky areas!

We're just jealous really as the SW'lys stopped us getting as far into France as we'd hoped. I finally gave up 2 days ago and decided to go with it rather than against it. Where could we head to, Northwards, where the food is good and the beer better and a fairly easy sail home...?

So we're in Oostende to round off the hols!

Look on the bright side - where you are now, diesel's cheap :p

Pls pass on our best to GOD :D

Prop now off and it doesnt look good - one of the spigots looks to be out of line. It is repairable tho will prob not be a same day job. We are in Rustler/Bowman boatyard and plan to rescue car from Weymouth tomorrow to deliver prop to Vecta. Looking very much like the boat holiday is over for the children - hopefully we can rescue a few days in Weymouth depending what we can find accomodation wise ...... in August. Ho bloomin hum.

Last year I followed a boat from Falmouth to Ramsholt in campervan and stayed at Haven Holiday Park at Weymouth for a night. Link follows. They have 4 days in big home for £619. Just the sort of place the kids may like even if it not your obvious choice.

The people were very helpfull. Might be worth a look.
