This is a very serious issue as underpaid staff do not work to teir best efficiency and the management dio not attract the people most suitable for the job.Your comments deserve a far wider exposure than the forum and I hope the magazines will do an investigation of the staffing levels and the job satsifaction.
I can't imagine a fire brigade despathcer putting together a group to savage the Napoli and prevent the pollution.Just going to sign.

Thanks very much for all your kind words of support. Its nice to know that people appreciate the service we provide. I know it's not always perfect, and there are one or two gripes aired now and again. However the general feeling seems to be supportive, for which I and my colleauges are very thankful.
It was interesting to read a comment about market forces etc... That must explain why HMCG is chronicaly understaffed at many MRCC's around the coast! At my station the latest recruit lasted just 2 weeks before resigning with the comment " It's just not worth it, I can earn more driving a lorry, and have a better lifestyle" this was from a interesting from a middle aged lady!
People are generally very tolerant and committed, after all who could just wash their hands of it all and walk away, especially at this time of year. Its not that easy to train people, as I mentioned earlier the training cycle is almost a year long. It's not the sort of job where bums filling seats is good enough. Maybe this counts as whistleblowing, maybe not but it gets to the stage where HMCG's profile needs to be raised and the wider maritime community made aware of the current action taking place.
Anyway once again thanks for your support.

I wish you every success and luck but it does seem that members of this government is there for personal gain with no care for the rest of us..........allegedly /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Already signed. How many of us using water borne activities realise that just a few years ago the starting pay for a Coastguard Watch Assistant with HM Coastguard was about £8000!! It is not much better now and with increasing numbers of pleasure craft users, divers etc the work involved at a Coastguard station has increased greatly but the pay received has more or less stood still. A standard round of watches on duty are 2 twelve hour days followed by 2 twelve hour nights.Mealbreaks,if you are lucky enough to get one during the summer period, are unpaid.

Signed. The patience, courtesy and professionalism of Coastguard staff are even more impressive when one considers how poorly they are paid. Do you think the Apparatchiks who seem to run most government agencies these days have done a proper cost benefit analysis to compare the relative benefits of paying Coastguard staff a decent wage and staffing at proper levels versus the vast wads of cash that will undoubtedly be spent policing the new alcohol regulations for yotties?

The latter addresses a grave but infrequent problem whereas poor pay and manning cut across all Coastguard operations and could impact all of us who go to sea.
Surely media attention couldn’t have affected Ladyman’s decision on alcohol testing? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif In hindsight was it a desperate attempt to raise his profile and hang on to his job? Maybe the new Minister could be influenced by initiatives such as this?
