Hit by a coaster, what to do?

Had a message from a club member to say that our fishing boat on a mooring had been swiped by a coaster.
Seemed unlikely, as I assumed it would have sunk if true!
However, went out and checked it yesterday and there's a substantial scrape down the side of it.
I have a witness, pictures of the damage and the name of the ship, what's the best way to proceed?
I assumed that the best course of action would be to contact the operator, but I'm struggling to find that information out.
 
What's the name of the boat, what information about it do you have. See if we can find the info you need on the net.

I can't get any more info than MMSI, AAIC etc. I don't want to make public the name of the ship in case of causing embarrassment, accidents happen etc and I imagine the implications could be quite serious for the captain if made official. It is also a very narrow channel that they have to negotiate.
I will go through the insurance if it comes to it, but reluctant to do that in case it's denied and I end up with a hiked premium for something that's not my fault.
I'll try calling the dock today that the ship left from and see if I get any luck there.

go on marine traffic & enter her name, contact port HM & report to incident. that might get some action

If you had turned up at your mooring and found your boat damaged, and nobody had any information about it, you would, unless the damage was trivial, have made a claim on your insurers. The only difference here is that you have some information and have decided to play detective and track down the owners of the other vessel. Suppose you do find its owners and they deny knowledge of the incident; where does that leave you?

You have two obligations to your insurers:

1. To disclose any material information affecting your insurance, eg your boat has been damaged.

2. To file any claim promptly.

Let the insurers deal with it. That's what you pay them for.

Very good point, I have called them and submitted a claim. They're far better placed than me to deal with it as you say.

I hope it all works out and you get your damage repaired.
 
Quick update, just in case anyone was interested.

I'm now into the second month of paying yard storage fees waiting for quotes for repair from people who promise the earth but deliver nothing.
The underwriters (Nav & Gen) have been extremely understanding, and helpful, and are trying to track down somebody who can actually provide an estimate.
The skipper of the coaster is claiming that my boat drifted from its mooring, into his path then must have somehow drifted back to the mooring and tied itself back up afterwards.
The battle, frustration and expense continues...

If you are fully comp its down to your insurers to get the boat reinstated to condition prior to the incident
.Dont take any crap from them,
