Hire van with towbar

Lancaster to Essex, where? that makes a difference. Say South Woodham Ferrers.

Total time probably about 16 hours allowing for loading, unloading roping down etc & reasonable breaks.

Large 4X4s are not cheap vehicels to run, they are capital equipment and a return has to be has to be made by a business on that investment over and above the cost of fuel insurance etc. Any person towing commercially with a vehicle capable of towing 3.5 tonnes will have to have a Tacho fitted.

So say:

Round Trip 540 Miles. Fuel Cost at 1.32 per litre at 23 MPG towing= £150

Wear, tear insurance etc. Say £75 (Low IMHO).

Two meals and a few coffees £30

Total £255

Leaves £225 for a 16 hour day or 2 X 8 hour days.

Not unreasonable in my opinion.

It cost me £120 to hire a newish Mitsubishi to tow my boat from Macclesfield to Windermere (200 mile round trip) plus fuel. I had to get the vehicle, collect the boat (on trailer) tow it up, launch it, bring the trailer back and take the vehicle back (Which was minutely inspected including the ridiculously fragile plastic lining to the load area)

It was a load of hassle and worry.

I bought a Volvo 240 estate with a years MOT for £195 to tow my boat, if I cash the tax in before the end of the month it only costs £15 for the tax. Works for me.

As the max towing weight for this car is 1500kg, if your boat and trailer exceeds this you will be breaking the law,

I thought of that. But the quoted displacement for the 570 on sites on the 'net ranges from 730Kgs to 1200Kgs so no-one seems sure.
The Shetland owners site seem to think 730 Kgs, but that's without engine, gear and trailer.

Trip to the weighbridge would be the only sure option.
