Hi,
I'm currently purchasing a 1969 She 31. I notice that in order to register her in the UK, I need the HIN number. I've checked the original build and registration documents and can't find any mention of a HIN.

Is the boat too old for a HIN? If so should it have another form of identification?

Many Thanks.

Too old, more to the point- make sure the paper trail has Vat less status prior to 1988- going foreign will be facilitated.

If you read the notes on MCA site for SSR regsitration ... I aassume you are doing SSR ... it specifically mentions that oleder boats often do not have HIN and can be safely ignored.

Quoting MCA letter recieved with my latest new Registration :>

The Hull Identification Number (HIN), has been recently introduced on newly constructed vessels, will only be shown on the Certificate of British Registry when the number has been submitted on the application form .....

Unquote.

OK ? Both my boats are registered SSR with no HIN ... Certificate just then says "Not Recorded"

As to the other gents reply about VAT etc. - that is another matter and not related really ...... Just make sure that you have a Bill of Sale with Year of Boat manufacturer clearly stated on it. This is not sufficient if some ambitious immigration / customs guy gets really nasty ... but will generally do. You should have VAT cert. on younger boats - You can bet there's a few on these forums who haven't ... for "old" boats like ours VAT wasn't even thought of ... !! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

You may also find the insurance will ask you to carve some kind of ident into a main beam. Obviously not an HIN but you could carve the ships name and SSR or something. With me they were just looking for some kind of unique identifier that would be harder to find or remove.

Maybe it is just another case of my 3rd Reich insurance stipulations.

Thanks very much for all your replies!

VAT is not due on boats built prior to 1973 - just waiting for written confirmation from HMRC.

Next stage is insurance!
