HIN on a pre-RCD boat

A surveyor has said that boats pre-RCD (1998) don't have a HIN. Is that true? I am sure I have seen sealines from pre 1998 with a HIN and I am sure my mid 90s ChrisCraft had one.

Can anyone confirm?

My 1989 Sealine has number in transom, don't recall seeing on other makes before 1998

It only became compulsory with the introduction of CE marking, but many builders were using the system before that.

Many builders were using a system.

The official HIN is a format that all manufacturers adhere to, that spells out key information in a specific way.

Prior to that manufacturers used their own systems of letters and numbers, on Sealines for instance it was a letter that referred to the year (from memory it was broadly in keeping with car registration letter years of the same era) whereas on the official current HIN system it is a three figure number that reflects the actual year of build and the model year.

Point being, don't assume that the info on a pre official HIN will 'decode' in the same way.

When we had a Storebro it had a number and that was built in 1967. However, in fairness it was simply a build number and therefore only of use to quote to Storebro for spares. Useful in that regard though as when some tyke put a brick through a window Storebro supplied a new one from stock in Sweden when she was almost 30 years old.

Spot on.
The point is, what were they using at Ferretti in '94, if anything?
I don't actually know, but I'd expect them to be firmly in the camp of those who did use a system of some sort.

as others have said, June or July 1998 it came into being, but some had already were using HIN numbers of some sort. I think from 1998 they had to be 14 digits
