High Tide & Green Grass

On the news there was a comment about there being the highest tide for 20 years next week due to the proximity of the moon. Looking at the tide table for Soton 8/10 gives a height of 5.0 and a range of 4.9, however at the end of March there was the lowest tide with a depth of -0.1 and a range of 5.0. ie greater range but lower HW. Interesting! All we need now is SW 8 with 970MB over us!

On that March one, the Lymington-Yarmouth ferry ran aground in Lymington River. All very droll!

I've lost count of the number of times that I've seen on TV that today's tide is the biggest/smallest this century/decade/ever.

Later bulletin said 40 years, but why does'nt the highest tide also have the lowest?

Possibly because the moment of greatest attraction coincided with low water in March and coincides with high water this time.

I understood it to be one of the biggest tides for 40 years so expected it to have a huge range i.e. very high and very low.

On a practical note, I can't babysit my boat on the days concerned (Oct 6th & 7th) and was wondering about adding an extra foot of scope to my swinging mooring line to prevent it maxing out at the top of the tide.....
