High price tools

No criticism of the company or their website - I like the place and my wife drives past it every day which is quite convenient, but I have never seen a plane this expensive before...

Axminster Power Tool Company used to be very competitive, and they also offered free delivery on even quite small orders, and they stocked power tools from a range of makers.

Now their prices seem no better than others, their delivery charges discourage small orders and they seem to stock fewer brands and push their own stuff.

Sick Transit etc

Looks just like my Record plane which I've had for about 40 years, works very well and only cost a fraction of that price. And made in the UK! Not sure where they are made nowadays though........

Modern Record planes are definitely lower end. Earlier this year I acquired a full set of the classic ones - around 40 years old - from my father. All brand new, all unused, all boxed. Lovely things, but I have no use for them ...

It's all about branding. After all, the Yanks have done the same thing with Snap On mechanics tools and have cornered the market amongst the youngsters who buy recognised names. They wouldnt consider Britool because thats not what they see being used by other young men.

Or Harley Davidson.

Bad business policy to cut the price. It devalues the brand. Instead improvce the image. Try to get to the point where high price is a valued part of the brand image. Virtuous circle as long as you don't make the Rover mistake and try to sell a **** product at a premium price.

You get what you pay for ...

It's all about branding.

Far from it. If you want a tool that works from the box, you have to pay a high price. If you buy a good quality but much cheaper plane like a Stanley you can reckon on two days' work to fettle it into a decent tool. Mind you, once you have done that you don't need to do it again, so if you reckon you are worth less than £100 a day or have a free weekend, buy a Stanley.

One day I'll get around to making the sole of my Record 077 completely flat.

As does my Stanley. Not just for cabinet makers, but for anybody who works with both softwoods and hardwoods.

Some of the most staggeringly beautiful hand tools in the world. I have a small Lie-Nielson plane and it just begs me to improve my standards and aspirations. It is only the very best tools which do this. As for putting it over wood with nails in it..... That is an insult to even the cheapest plane. Use the £50 Bosch power planer for that.

you my friend are wrong. i have Stanley i trained 48 yrs ago as a" Carpenter & Joiner" the adjustments available on the expensive tools such as the one mentioned are far & away beyond that, that is required for normal woodwork. these are specialists tools for fine work

Its www.woodworkuk.com that has the for sale section ukworkshop is the hobby place but yes they would drool over the collection of planes rather than use them . Stanley have re invented the sweet heart brand and tried to get up to date with the crazy priced plane market . Mixed reviews but i have one and think its fine . Then again i just use it rather than look at the problems it might have . It cuts wood so its good !

Just relate the price now to the price 40 years ago and the wages then and now .I bought my first plane when I was 16 and it cost over a weeks wages, before I semi retired I could have bought 2 of those planes for my weeks wages.

No you dont but as long as you think that there will be a businessman somewhere happy to supply you. In fact they will even raise the price a bit more so that you will know the tool must have improved even further.
