The veneered doyen of the Scottish sailing scene and, since time immemorial, Cruise Director of one of the highlights of the cruising calendar has shocked his acolytes with the revelation that he has appropriated the name of said cruise in company for his own ends.

The itinerary for the 2007 event has been put back 3 weeks and is now to take the form of a passage from Fleetwood to Loch Melfort. Unsurprisingly, this will limit to zero the number of Scottish vessels who will be able to take part.

Am I wrong to think that this is no more than a scam to have his tub delivered to God's own cruising ground for the price of a tank of diesel and a slab of cheap lager for his willing crew?

Others have opined that this is an acute attack of wallet worry at the suggestion that he should charter a vessel for the traditional weekend.

Perhaps this simply represents the first serious error in an otherwise sure-footed term in office?

I am at a loss to know and would be grateful for any advice.

Brave man!

However, i can't hide my own disappointment at the change, and won't be able to make any delivery trip; although the first bank hol in may remains completely ringfenced and empty, my other diary dates in May have already been judged to be free for payback er i mean family committments.

My own preparations have already inlcuded the vast expense of chopping in the car which seemed too large for other drivers to see over the bonnet, and have now purchased another vehicle that is both small enough for that one possible occupant - yet also of the correct configuration (estate diesel) and colour (silver) specifically to suit another likely passenger. I haven't yet got round to backfilling it with rubble to make him feel completely at home, but i thought that could be a project for March. All in vain.
