Yes - I remember this problem when I was sailing around in wide beamed saling cats. Always looking for hammerheads or double berths in marinas.
There lies some of the practical issues regarding beam - do you go narrow or wide. Best choice is related to speed, economy, comfort and practicality rather like the displacement, SD or planing debate with a mono.
