Anyone had any experience of Hi-Mod swageless rigging terminals?

They are made in the UK by Petersen Stainless Rigging Ltd (up in Tyne & Wear) and sold by S3i (and others). Looking at the design they appear to be well engineered and easy to fit. I particularly like the look of the bronze wedge that is notched to evenly space the individual wire strands around the cone. I have used Sta-loks in the past and found that getting the wires to lay evenly round the cone without one slipping onto the slot can be a fiddle on smaller wire sizes. S3i prices for Hi-Mod fittings also look cheaper than equivalent Sta-loks.

I have order one to take a look at but wondered if others had used them - apparently the range was first put on the market around 2003.

I shall be interested to hear what you find, they seem to offer some advantages over Sta-Lok and Norseman.

So far as these two are concerned I find Sta-Lok far easier to make up in bigger sizes than the Norseman because the cable end and cone fit inside the fitting on the Sta-Lok, whereas on the Norseman the fitting goes inside the cone assembly. The Hi-mod appears to be the same type as the Norseman.

seem to be a usa company. where does tyne & wear come in?

Hi-Mod terminals are definitely made in the UK by Petersen Stainless Rigging Ltd http://www.petersen-stainless.co.uk/ of Blaydon on Tyne, Tyne & Wear. They are distributed in N. America by Hayn Marine.

Petersens site has a short video of how to assemble the terminals http://www.petersen-stainless.co.uk/videos/6mm assembly for web.mpg. But the S3i site has photo assembly instructions which better illustrate how they work http://www.s3i.co.uk/swagelesstechnical.php.

I've used Hi-Mod on several occassions over the last 5 years.
The product quality is consistently good.
The crown ring makes spreading the wires a sinch.
I would highly recommend them.
For cutting the wire I use an angle grinder with one of those very thin cutting blades.
Whilst you are waiting for the connector to arrive don't forget to get some Loctite.

Hi Mod Terminals

I'm interested in these terminals and wondered if any of leading boat builders are now fitting them - anyone know?

I used them when rigging out by new boat last year.

They are easy to use. There is a good vidio on how to assemble them on the Petersen website and a good instructions leaflet is also supplied with each fitting.

They are manufactured in the UK.

I had all the standing rigging supplied 500mm overlength with swege termimals at the top by S3i.

I used Petersen Hi-mod fittings for all the lower connections, open bodied bottlescrews and the backstay SSB insulators.

I found no difficulty in attaching the lower fittings once the mast had been craned into the hull while I was sitting on the deck.

They are much easier to assemble if a vice is used.

I got a couple of small sachets of the recomended Locktite from ebay and this did all the fittings.

I did destroy one crown ring when I dismantled one fitting.

Spare parts are quickly supplied by S3i.

I sailed with them for the later part of last season without any problems in winds peaking up to a seven. There is no sign of any rust or corosion on them.

I have caps, intermediates, lowers, forestay, backstay, removable babystay and removable inner forestay all in 8mm 1/19 316 wire.

I like them.

Cheers

Iain
