I am sure i have seen this question asked twice before,
Boathook your link does not work, well not for me anyway.
The OP posted in mid December asking the same question and that thread has disappeared. It worked when I posted. The OP didn't get any real answer I said they looked the same and someone commented that a missing cowling is a sign that the engine has been stolen.

Don't know whether the OP removed it or the mods. If the mods, it would be nice for them to make some comment !

No knowledge but by the photographs supplied, they look a very different shape, the later photo looks more sculptured but that may just be for styling rather than fit.

Have you tried to obtain part numbers to compare?

The parts lists show 3 possible designs for a post 2007 BF50 top cover , The photos in #1 both look like the middle one of the three. But what one really needs to know are the VIN (serial) numbers.

Is there a part number for the seal trim around the bottom of the cowls?
If the part number is the same on each cowl, it’s likely the cowls will all interchange.
I would expect that a change of the design of the top of the cowl is an easy facelift with only one change of tooling, and the clamshells around the engine block are the same across several generations, so cowls are probably interchangeable.

I wonder - why does the OP have a cover for an old Honda and is missing the cover for a new Honda.

I was not aware that an OP can remove a thread. Why are stolen Hondas likely to have missing covers?

Very odd thread.

The cowling is the most obvious and visible place to add something to deter thieves, such as distinctive paint.
I painted the cowling of a small outboard white to make it less desirable or easy to sell on.
I read many years ago that painting outboards entirely matte black made them the least stolen outboards in problem areas.
You might think a big 50hp outboard would be hard to steal, but there was a time when whole rows of fishing boats pulled up beaches would have their transoms cut out with chainsaws to get at the motors.

It may be an innocent question, the OP may have a damaged cover and not wish to pay Honda prices for a new replacement.
Maybe someone stole their unmarked cowl to go on another engine.

My apologies - I live a very sheltered life and never had an outboard I could not take home.

We live and learn.

Seems obvious now that you explain.
