Welcome, unfortunately, this is going to be a difficult learning curve. Have a look around marinas and see whats being used to live aboard, this will give you an idea of what you would be needing.
Safe?? No boat is safe. But soem are safer then others, have a look and read lots. Good luck.

First things first, after a 15 year layup just get back on a boat, and make sure the governor enjoys it too.

Once you do that you can start thinking, not dreaming.

After your last craft 32 foot is going to feel like a ballroom, and it will take time for you to work out the optimum craft, and remember "any boat can do anything in the right hands", given your vintage you can think of "Shrimpy" and a host of ply boats that did wonders in good, or lucky hands.

The greatest thing is to have the dream and be working for it.

Nicholson 32, Rival 31,32 and 34, Elizabethan 30, 31 and 33 (personally think 31 is best suited), but there are many more from the days when a 31ft yacht was considered large.
I would recommend that you
1. Get a copy of the good yacht guide
2. There were some very good articles in either YM or PBO in '98 about circumnavigating in just the sort of boats you're talking about which I'm happy to fotocopy and send to you - they include choice of boat, preparation, equiping, budgets etc.
3.Get hold of a copy of 'Blue Water Countdown' by the late Geoff Pack - he chose a Rival 32.

Good Luck and have fun. Feel free to PM me if you want any further info.
And as Parsonsheath says, get sailing again in the interim, as often as you can.

I hate to say this,, but i read that book,, many years ago,, and i'm sure thats what planted the seed.

I spent all last night reading the forum,, all the old posts,, and realised im going to change some things right away,, my boat budget just got halved,,, thanks to a comment that i read..

I agree that its going to be a long road, but we have to start somewere..

Read "Sensible Cruising" by Don Casey and Lew Hackler. You may have to buy it online. I bought mine in the States. Lovely book to read and lots of good advice. Also read "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau - to which Sensible Cruising refers. Thoreau's book isn't a boaty book - but he was a very insightful character. Also read "Sell up and Sail" by Bill and Laurel Cooper.

Have fun.
