I have just been given a boat from someone than has cleared there yard. It is my first boat so no doubt I will have loads of questions.

My 1st on is I can not find the HIN, and I don't have any paperwork for the boat. I do however have the name painted on the side "Ratty V" and I have also found a sticker on the dashboard (there may be a nautical term for it but I am sure that will come in time.)

well to be exact it is part of a sticker it says

" of Wallin "
"e Boat House Tel: Wal"

Right so I am assuming that Wallin is Wallingford, is there any way I can track down any more info about the boat? Can I still register the boat without a HIN?

Wasnt Ratty one of Toad's friends?

Since the story was supposed to have taken place at or was written at Mapledurham Estate at Wallingford thats far too obvious a link.

Any photos of the boat?

Try to get a photo up online .
Lots of ways inc Photobucket.
Takes a few mins to set up...but one picture can say a thousand words .

Hi all thanks for the advice, I will upload a pic when I get to work.

I suppose if there is no record of the boat then a change of name might happen.

I got an insurance quote of 80 quid is that about right?

No "Ratty V" on Jim Shead's Boat List but there is a "Ratty VI" - could be the "I" has come off the boat making you think it was "V" ?

RATTY VI Built by Wottens Boatyard in 1985 - Length 4.9 metres (16 feet 1 inch ) - Beam 1.3 metres (4 feet 3 inches ) a Petrol Outboard engine with a power of 6HP. Registered with EA Thames Region number F016759 as a Non Hire Annual. Last registration recorded on 27/04/2007.

I was thinking similar, but along the lines it was part of a rental fleet, and the VI was her sister. I don't think the "I" has come off as the name is on it on 3 places.

I did also notice this morning a patch on the side that looks like a "20" sticker has been removed.

Am I worrying too much about what she is? From what I can see it is not like a car where you need all the info for insurance etc.

I picked up a Mercury 25 blueband long shaft for her yesterday, any tips on mounting it?

I would say you wanted a short shaft for that but never mind . Do you have the remotes with the outboard ? Its fairly obvious how it hooks on to the boat but you may need some parts for the steering loom and the remotes if they dont match the outboard . I hope you have the right parts or deep pockets

I have some remotes already on the boat I just assumed they would all be the same:( oh well I am sure a bit of enginuity, ti-wraps, and bodge tape will see me through (joke)

How different can they be?

Totally different but you may be lucky . If you look under the cowling you will see where they need to go . If i remember corectly the blue band has a metal sleeve that sits over the end of the remote cable and that connects it to the outboard . I could be wrong though .

Thought it might be.
Well known fact that any airfield is always a least 10C colder than the surrounding countryside.

Yup, often wondered why they hold the British GP at an old airfield. Have got very cold and wet there in the past. Oh, hang on....
