I finally decided to run up the 2.5kva on the boat which I understand is an HFL 2.6kva, single piston unit from the mid eighties that hasn't been started in two years since we took ownership of the boat. Having checked fuel, cooling water and start voltage present, I pressed the button and after a few turns of the key, it spluttered into life ejecting a pleasing amount of water and voltages all good.

My problem is how to stop the bloody thing! It has a remote electric start panel so I assumed I'd press a button or turn it off with the key but no such luck. There is no cable with handle to pull as a manual stop so I'm a bit stumped. As luck would have it, the genset only runs for about five minutes before it slowly dies but I'm sure that is fuel starvation as I'm sure the filter will not have been changed and is clogged. Sadly I'm back home and didn't take any photos.

Any CONSTRUCTIVE advise would be appreciated.

Cheers
Rob

can you turn and hold the key backwards?

No, I tried that but since coming home wondered if there was a separate stop switch by the main engine stops. Reckon I'll have to see if there is a stop solenoid on the genset and trace something back from there!

Oh the joys of taking on an overcomplicated boat!

I’ve got an HFL and I’m trying to imagine the panel. I’m sure that mine is all toggle switches - on/off, and then another for heat/start and then when it’s running you flick the on back to off (when you want to stop it!)

I knew I should have taken photos, thanks for the response, I too am sure that is how it should operate. Like many things on the boat, I think I'll be getting a new start panel and rewire it all. Thank you for taking the time to respond ?
