could have been a lot worse.other than obviously rebuilding tiller/rudder assembly,i think i will be reinstating the outboard well.a previous owner had blanked it off and fitted a transom bracket.i think ( tho' maybe wrong) that would have prevented the prop coming out of the water, which would have given me steerage back?

Great, pleased you are safe, that's one in the bank of experience for sure.

The outboard well, in most circumstances, will create as many problems as it solves. In your case on Sunday, it would not really have helped becuase it would be difficult to steer in the well anyway.

Best of luck with the rest of the season.

hi guys, yeah it was me,not a good start, can only get better.left heybridge saturday 4:30pm,leisurely sail down to bradwell, anchored overnight.bit blowy during the night but fairly good sunday morning.pulled the hook up about 7:30 am and got into the brightlingsea channel just after 9 wjith no iffy moments.then the wind got up and water got a bit choppy but all was going to plan until the tiller snapped off the rudder stock.tried steering via the outboard but it had got so choppy by then the prop was out of the water more than it was in it! Not a good day.Huge thanks to coastguards and especially the clacton lifeboat crew.

I can't imagine many people not asking for a bit of help in this situation (expect forum members who never sail without a spare tiller, emergency rudder etc to be along soon...), lack of steering is high on my 'need help please!' list.

Well done for the honest account of the weekends events.

Good news.

Think positively, you will be able to develop and embroider the story so much you will probably be able to earn a living doing inspirational presentations. :)

Speak to Sailorman, he will commission you for a FMYC evening!

Glad you are safe and the boat is ok.
