Hi all

After so many rotten days with persistent easterlies the wind finally swung round to the NW, which, incidentaly is where it should be most of the time. This gave us a chance to get out for the third time in 10 days. Wow !!! etc.
Some friends are over here for the TT, you know that leave your brains at home thing we just love over here. (Lap record now up to 134+ mph In my day on my 350 BSA Goldie I managed an alarming 88 mph, and I have posted some pix of me doing it in 1955. ) However to get on with the story, we chugged out and were tight in under the lee of the land in nice calm water.
No sooner were the hooks in the water than we started catching mackerel. That’s no surprise as they tend to jump into the boat, but my friends are in the main total beginners, never having sea fished, so this was a WOW experience. Also I have a friend who has a shop selling all fishing gear,, so he appreciates bait fish.
We landed 48, but if you have seen one you have seen them all, so I wont bore you with their sour looks. But the best of the day was this. The scale reads 10 lb and for here that is a big fish. So Omega, at last a fishy pic

The other two were very nice but not in that league.

While we were out we met TommieDee in Satsuma, heading back to Port St Mary. He had looked around the corner of the Calf and wisely decided that it was not a good idea to head for Peel. Better luck next time. Very nice boat too..Here’s a pic .

So that’s about it for today……Neddie Seagoon came with us, and did a lot of helming while I had to attend to all the rods, baits, and of course the inevitable tangles. Right…so just these pix.……… and now into the bath with a froth of relaxing bubbles.

Cheers /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Great to see you using the boat as intended, if you have Mackerel about then the Tope will not be far away, why not put a Mackerel back down and give it a go, we are just beginning to see a few in the Thames now along with some good Bass. The weather over the past few weeks has been "pants" but we have managed a few trips. Have you tried Blue Jellies for the pollack??

Hi Omega

That fish was caught on a real sand eel, and the others were one on white featherss, (for the mackerel) and the other on mackerel strip.
I have not yet used blue jellies, but as always I take advice from the more expert than myself.
Not heard of any tope yet this year, but will give it a try, weather permitting of course, as its not too god again already. . Hope its not going to be the same as last year.....

cheers /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Hey Drew

How efficient are you at getting photos up on the forum! I have barely returned home from that trip and there are photos of your massive fish (yes Omega the weight is genuine - i verified it with my binocolurs!).

As you say, yesterday when we met, I rightly turned back after getting half way round the Calf. Despite the blue sky and pleasant sea on the easterly side of the Island, there was a huge swell and confused lumpy sea on top of that south/southwest of the Calf. Nose diving twice and being hit beam on with a swell on the nose is not pleasant.

As i was "lowish" on fuel and single handed, decided to head back up the east coast. Coco Leonie, a 32ft sportsboat with my friend and his family aboard ploughed on through some very nasty stuff and bolted for Port Erin where they stayed most of the evening and then heading into Peel last night.

Imagine my surprise when i was picking up fallen bits and bobs in the lee of the Calf to be radioed by Neddie from your boat. It was very nice to hear a friendly familiar voice after the pounding i just took.

I think you will agree that the Calf, the Sound and Chicken Rock on a bad day (even with blue skies and lightish winds) can make the Swellies look like a mill pond!

I put in to Pt St Mary, met SWMBO and 2 young kids for tea, stuck 40 litres in and then headed single handed for Douglas about 7pm. I made sure i refuelled when i got there. Had to raft up alongside tug until after midnight to get flap into inner harbour. Plenty of activity though with visiting yachts arriving, lifeboat towing in striken yacht and commercial traffic.

Met a nice bunch of guys from Conwy on a 32foot Contessa who came alongside at 11pm. The 12.45am bridgelift was like rush hour - 6 boats!

Anyway that was my day out and thanks to you and Neddie for checking in on me in Pt St Mary Harbour.

Catch up soon, and keep catching those monnsters!

It was good to see you Tom, we were only out because we knew we would be staying in the lee of the Calf for most of the day; when I walked the dogs on Port Erin beach Thursday morning there was a big swell and white horses in the bay, and the only yacht on the visitors moorings was pitching and bucking like a rodeo ride. We did venture round the Burroo to see if we could find a sheltered spot on the south side, but no joy.

Gratuitous fish pic.
