Has anyone used heat exchanger descalers such as Rydlime to prevent future problems? Is it worth it

/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif?

Vinegar works quite well too! Or kettle / coffee machine de scaler - cheaper in foreignshire
Recommend that you take the heat exchanger off - avoid all the crud that comes loose wandering about the cooling system

I used rydlyme to great effect...I wish I had used it more often as I suffered a scaled heat exchanger that put me out of action for a week on my trip to Greece.

I now descale every few years.

Rydlyme is biodegradable so you can be a bit casual about using it...as opposed to the acid type descalers.

I hook up a spare freshwater pump and run the solution through the engines for a few hours as directed...the whole system gets a flush...with minimal dismantling.

What makes you think Rydlyme is not acid based? Yet to figure out exactly what is in it but appears to be hydrochloric acid based buffered in some way to raise the pH , but they dont satisfactorily say what the pH is .

I would have loved to have got some into the lab!

Organic acid descalers are probably a lot slower in their action. A sulphamic acid based central heating boiler descaler, eg Fernox DS3, would be quicker but is harmful to aquatic life.
