Here is a handy tip. Don't put your tool box on the bunk in the aft cabin and then reach up for a screw driver, but inadvertently bring the whole thing crashing down on you head whilst you are working in the bilge.

I do wish someone had told me before yesterday.

Get well soon...

On a similar note, don't drop your car keys in the bilge.
And, if you do, don't try reaching down for them with one arm, as you will end up wedged up to the shoulder like a vet in a cow, with your big yellow wellies waving helplessly in the air for all the harbour to see. :)

And here's another handy tip -

If despite the warning above you do reach down head first into a bilge with several inches of oily water (watery oil?) in it (not mine!), do remove your wallet from your shirt top pocket before you do so.

And another -
your shirt top pocket might be a handy place to store your mobile while on land, but never use it at sea, especially when retrieving the anchor.

.. or when leaning over the stern to check the exhaust.

Do not place your car, house and boat keys on the transom while assisting the family dog on board, their paws tend to scrabble for grip!

You will see the lot whizz past you though!

Don't park the companionway steps in place without fixing them there.
The ride to the cabin floor with one foot on the top step ends in you lying on your back on the other side of the steps. I can remember it like it was in slow-motion, here we go....

I've a few tips....

1. Don't climb into that cavernous cockpit locker without first tying the lid in the open position. This prevents it closing, and latching while you are in there.

2. Don't even think about attempting 1 when you are single handed and have the luxury of an auto-pilot.

The skipper who gave me this tip said it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Don't pop below to put the kettle on when a crew mate is fixing the impeller and has removed the steps.

Another handy tip

If you're sailing along nicely single-handed, and suddenly your guts feel like they've turned inside out and you have to dash to the heads NOW (and not to be sick!), and lacking time to heave-to you leave her on the autohelm, you may find you're gone much longer than you expected. So don't do it on a weekend in the Solent!

When you have had four beers do not offer to jump in your dinghy and take someone's lines to the pile you are both attaching to. You will fall into Yarmouth Harbour.
