Henry

I'd like to provide a bit of background info for those folks who haven't been around for the past 15 years or so. Haydn (hlb) organised and, with the input of those around at the time, came up with the mouse and glass motif. He then singlehandedly organised the production and distribution of the burgee, even organising a few one off designs for a few people. I can't exactly remember the timeline, but he probably did this for about 10 years, all in his own time and they were sold at cost price, so not a penny went into Haydns pocket.

He's been ill for quite some time now, he lost his wife a few years back and has had other family problems. Boating, and to a certain extent, this forum, were the mainstay of his life. That's almost all gone, he can't walk so his beloved Meekatharra was sold some time ago. With it went just about everything that was good in Haydns life. Yes, he can be cantankerous and irritable, but with his problems, how many of us wouldn't be the same?

Without a few people like Haydn this forum wouldn't be what it is today, so please cut him some slack if he gets a little upset/pissed/arsey at times, especially when it comes to the forum burgee. Without him, there would almost certainly would not be any burgee. There has never been a queue of people volunteering to take it over.

Good luck to Henry in his efforts to bring the burgee back. My two penny worth is that I really have no strong feelings about any design. I have a mouse and glass burgee but haven't flown it for maybe 10 years, I was never a great fan of the design but was happy to go along with the majority view and to support Haydn. And I'll do the same with whatever Henry produces.

Well put.

I think threads like this make me want to keep my head down so I don't have to meet any of you!

That said, I have met a few of you and I do have a burgee!:o

Hear, hear. I would just like to add the following.

I've been on here for 13 years or so (2002-4 under a different name). Longer than some but not as long as others.

I was thrilled to be able to buy a burgee that denoted my membership of a club that anyone could join but which required you to put in some effort rather than mere cash in order to continue being an active member.

I wore out a few burgees and Haydn replaced them all, for which I was grateful.

My adventures were, by Haydn's standards, pretty timid but I've always stuck to the mantra of there being nothing better than messing about in boats and I have enjoyed my time both in boats and on this forum, chatting about boats.

I've met Henry a few times and he's also a top man. I'm sure his plans to bring the delivery of burgees into the modern era will be excellent.

I do think Haydn has administered exactly the timely kick up the bum that Henry needed.

So, all in all, I see this thread as hugely positive and am sure everyone can look forward to getting their classic mouse and glass design in a modern way.

Now then Henry, how about drone delivery. Get with it man. :D

Well, I met a load of people with Kwacka when we went darn sarf to the Solent meet. It was a brilliant weekend and everyone we met was lovely. Now, over the years I have teased a few & had a couple of minor spats, but it really was great to meet folks. So much so that I have arranged the Welsh Beer & Natter Meet simply to repeat the experience.

What is posted on an internet forum has very little to do with real people & real life. - oh & I like my burgee, I fly it regularly, it is quirky & a conversation piece, I see no need for a change.

looking forward to being shown around your neck of the woods soon :encouragement:

I think that's part of the issue with the lounge and why so many were either banned or left with their tails between their legs - they say stuff that they wouldn't say in person. Posts often come across as rude or opinionated where if said over a beer in a bar would be laughed off as banter. I see both perspectives and Henry has shown considerable restraint where others would have been far more vocal.

Whatever the merits or otherwise of the design, I think the decision to leave as is was the right one. It is distinctive but subtle and those who frequent the forums will recognise it. I always use mine and have seen a couple of others when out and about.

Aannnddddddd!!.....reeellllaaaaxxxxxxxxx!........guys!.......life is too short!!. Haydn is a top guy with a bit of time on his hands but wants to be involved...........Henry is a top guy with a busy life (business to run) but wants to be involved!..

All concerned have something in common........sea/socialising etc. ....... Take a chill pill!!..........better to be friends at sea than enemies via an impersonal (sometimes!!??) social media site!!

I know, lets ask Henry if he would like some help with this, I know just the man !

Not at this point thanks. There is already someone who has helped out but who didn't want to get involved publicly with all the aggro. I can see why. I've spoken with my chap on the IT side over the weekend and hoping to get that resolved this next week. I have ordered a little addition to the current burgees that are with me, need them to arrive so I can finalise photography.

Give it two weeks or so for everything to click into place.

Henry :)

Nor would there have been a thread on exploding bogs either which, without doubt, was the greatest forum thread of all time but sadly now lost in the digital ether, gone but not forgotten. And yes, without Haydn, the forum burgee would never have seen the light of day in the first place and as you say, it wouldn't have continued to be in existence without Haydn's selfless hard work either. Poor Haydn has indeed had a hard time recently and deserves our support rather than criticism

The context is appreciated; as a relative noob and someone who does not frequent the Lounge, it did seem strange to read support for the OP and restraint from the eponymous recipient.

Look forward to seeing the eshop soon and best wishes to the OP, grumpy old SOB that he is :)

Is there no one that can help/chivvy hib and maybe others if they want to,to put some of the old days back on here or in print. It must of been great back then,no PC nonsense, people seeing offence at the slightest thing etc.

All I see on this thread and the other long one is some taking offence at an old man who loved the tradition of the burgee and what it represented and stood up for it.He is blunt and cantankerous, different generation,
a scary northerner to people south of the M25 maybe!,bit like my father and a few others probably. In fact the only rudeness I have seen is hib being accused on both threads of being an old late night soak.He could have told some posters to mind there own bloody business but to his credit he has not.

It's always the way with forums, I've been on plenty of them.. they all have the same lifecycle really.. lots of enthusiasm to get things going, ideas run out, things get a bit samey after rolling out the same topics year on year and then it starts, the 'originals' start to have a pop at the 'Newbs' (vice versa).. As Searush has said, it aint all bad, we get on when we get together in real life

I believe the old exploding bogs thread is truly lost as it was not saved when the forum went through one of it's periodic changes. In any case, it was hilarious at the time and like a lot of things that were funny at the time, it probably wouldn't be so funny now. Basically it was about hlb attempting to clear a blockage in his heads whilst cruising at sea with the inevitable carnage resulting. As ever with funny stories it was as much about the way he told it as the story itself

At that time there was no such thing as the Lounge and not much by way of moderator censorship either. The Lounge came about because so many threads in the Mobo forum drifted inevitably and often petulantly into other non-boaty areas. It was anarchy for a while but I liked that and I wish it was still like that but I was in the minority at the time so the Lounge was born

Yes, hlb was doing an excellent impression of being a miserable Northern git even then. Nice to see that some things don't change;)
