I have never been near Henley when the regatta is on, but this weekend I was planning on mooring at medmenham on the saturday night. Then on the sunday head on to Henley to look at what is going on before heading back to Bray, later in the day.

Couple of questions:

Does Medmenham get really busy on the regatta weekend and therefore could be a risk of getting there and no moorings (bearing in mind this is always the one place on the river, that always seems to have lots of spaces).

Also, is it normal mooring prices at medmenham, or do they push the price up and also maybe have to book in advance.

any help, greatly appreciated

There are two things that are vital for Henley, this is good advice and I strongly advise you to take it...

Booze - Triple what you think you might need.

Ice - Triple what you think you might need.

Repeat each day......

On a serious note I don't know what the mooring situation is this year but I would just take a punt (not a real one) and head up there and see what you can find. Private moorings will be well sign posted, there will be something free as the days of the whole stretch going corporate are long gone....

I've no real experience in struggling to find a mooring on the 'upper' Thames.... it's been 35 years or so since I had a cruiser based at Shiplake.
However, having a yacht I often find the same problems when wanting a mooring overnight anywhere in or near the Solent, especially at weekends. Therefore I'm used to anchoring.
What are the restrictions on anchoring in/on the Thames?

Medmenham has about 4 good deep water moorings, and about 20 shorter/shallower less good moorings. There's about 4 or 5 boats permanently there, and I think Steve who does the moorings moves off of Fawley Meadows and goes to Medmenham for the Regatta period.

Best to arrive early! I wouldn't anchor anywhere overnight in the area due to the high speed race downriver towards Hurley after the fireworks.

Motores up there from Sonning today for the first time......what a fabulous experience! Cruised slowly along the reach where the grandstands and races are.....lots of traffic but all very manageable....perfect for photos so DONT FORGET your camera if its a first time out there....

Coming through Marsh Lock the lockie commented on how many available moorings there are this year. At £40 a pop along where the park for the River Museum is no wonder! We moored for an hour...had lunch at the new Tapas restaurant (EXCELLENT) by the bridge.....didnt pay a penny.

Go for it.....my sons want to go up there tomorrow to take a look so may see you there :-)

40 quid at the park ! We used to pay 6 for three boats .... But we had a lot of women on board who used to get miffed at being woken so early by the addendant ..

Those were the days ....
