Henley....Agian !

its all down to DEPTH DEPTH DEPTH and a few rings pretty please !

For those of us who like to enjoy a variety of types of moorings on old Father Thames , it is to be welcomed that the local council is becoming aware that the quality of river moorings can be a real attraction for boaters ..
Henley is probably more aware than most towns of the cash that any river can generate, it could be a 365 day a year asset as opposed to a rather elitist fortnight .
It would be shame if the moorings gained a reputation as somewhere to be avoided at all costs.

Maidstone BC has finally woken up to the fact its river frontage could generate cash and has spent money regenerating the moorings and tidying up the place.
The Medway Towns are also in the middle of a long term effort to provide easy access to and from the river, to tidy up the area and to promote activities involving the water.
It does help if your local MP runs a small boatyard and some councillors have boats.
Rochester Cruising Club have long courted the local powers that be and treat the Mayor/Mayoress and their gang to day out on the river every year, including "refreshments". :):):)
What does your area do to snuggle up to the people with the power to do something, snipe from the sidelines perhaps ?
Although much doom and gloom is expressed regards boating, things are looking up.

If this mooring collection gets hived out a private parking revenue company you bet it makes a difference!

Not sure where you have got this from, Henley council have put out a tender for a contract to refurbish the moorings themselves for the benefit of boaters and the town. There is no mention of how the fees will be collected, currently they reverted back to using the grounds men instead of the parking machines and this is by far the best compromise.

And with all due respect nothing to do with the EA, B1 and TMBA, cost will most likely approach a million by the time they have done the whole area of Marsh and Mill meadows, so I don't think a couple recently bent props was really the biggest driver to get on with it.

my mooring fee was collected by young lady in brand new van with the name of a vehicle hire cpmpany on the side.

On reflection ,it could have been anybody collecting the dosh, certainly nothing to suggest either the van/young lady or the proffered receipt was anything remotely connected to HBC.

I didn't get it from anywhere I said if 'Nothing to do with B1 etc.' sorry I thought he had had word with the HBC
on behalf of boaters - maybe he didn't.

Why should that matter, unless you're trying to avoid payment?

You clearly have not had any experience of dealing with these private enforcement companies. They have no discretion, target driven and any recourse is via an appeals service funded by the parking companies. We have had numerous problems in my area where camera enforcement notices are arriving through the post claiming people had parked when in fact the had only dropped a person off momentarily and moved on. Nothing to do with avoiding due payment at all. Just don't stop to pick anyone up from the Meadows if such an outfit should get the franchise for enforcement. Remember wheel clampers - lovely people!

Yes, I did meet with HTC Parks Department staff on several occasions, the most recent with the EA when we tried to find the obstruction. I intend to maintain those contacts and will continue to keep a watching brief as things progress.
We still have no firm evidence of the exact position and nature of an obstruction - we only know that a number of boats have suffered prop damage from striking something. Investigations are continuing.
Fees are currently collected by their own park staff and we will have to wait and see if that changes in the future, but hey, lets not go looking for trouble.
For now, it is clear that HTC are prepared to spend a considerable sum to improve and repair the mooring runs nd I think we should commend them and be grateful for that.

Well done to you Tony, I thought you had made contact and well done to HBC. If they keep everything in house that's good news. The grounds people were always very pleasant. I was never looking for trouble just aware of what can happen when Councils subcontract to private revenue collection agencies. I am happy that my fear of hiving off to private enforcement sharks have been allayed. I might even plan a trip round from Plymouth to re-visit old Thames haunts.

Worth while exercise for them as the revenue from mooring boats must be quite a tidy sum every day, how many boats can moor on that stretch 40? at a tenner a pop with no real day to day expense, maybe a few bags of rubbish, nothing compared to the visitor to the parks who pay nothing directly. Then there is the money spent by visiting boaters in the town.

While what Chill says is no doubt correct, what is not catered for is the boater who wishes to stop for an hour or two. Our boat is moored not too far away and many is the time while passingwe would have liked to stop and go into the town to shop or have lunch or a coffee but cant (won't) because of the £10 charge. It costs 60p for an hour in the car park!

You can, mooring on the council moorings is free during the day!

Not sure what you do to solve the short term parking vs here for the night conundrum at all the popular locations.
Especially Windsor and Henley.
When we visit, it usually involves some sort of plan to try and arrive at our planned next stop just as all the
proper overnighters are departing but before all the adventurous max one lock max 20 mins from marina queens clog up the better moorings. :) Many of whom, with a slightly longer lead could remain plugged in to their berth shorepower.
Suggestions written on the back of £50.00 note sent to OG please !.

Chuckling at that OG! I never understood why Windsor YC had their BBQ rally weekend at Boveney Lock, where's the Dunkirk spirit of adventure?
