Whale and Henderson are all Munster Simms pumps. We bought a Foot pump fresh water kit recenetly, a diaphragm and a few rubber O rings. That was £12... I think they sell the pumps cheap and then pile the price on the spares. Mind you our Foot pump was 23 years old, probably cost about £20 when installed, now cost £45... 50p a year is not an excessive amount for maintenance though.

How about a piece of waggon inner tube?

And will you be happy to rely on it when your yacht is sinking?

On the pricing issue it's simple realy. For the spares, retailers charge what they would like to charge to make the margin they need. For the entire pumps they can only sell them for what they can get.

And that's the same for almost everything you buy that is sold in a competetive environment by people who have no real interest in supporting their products or customers long term (and lets face it, how many of us customers could be termed loyal enough to pay over the odds? Answer - none, especially if we know how to use the internet!).

Solution, buy the pump as cheap as you can get it, and pay what you have to for spares when they are a distress purchase.

"Pay what you have to when they are a distress purchase". The problem is, of course, that one cannot wait until they are a "distress" purchase. I usually change the rubber innards of my three pumps (manual bilge, electric bilge and Lavac) every two years; I do not relish any one of these failing when needed! At the same time a bill of about £68 for the spares for three pumps seems a bit steep.

I'm afraid I can't see the need to change the 'innards' as often as you do. Everyone to their own thing of course, but having a similar set-up to you and full time cruising, we have only changed the Lavac diaphram once in 7 years.

The MkV bilge pumps are checked once a year and are still in excellent condition after many years. 'Course, we have to pour water into the bilges to test them as the boat is bone dry, so once a year with all that mess is quite enough IMHO.

Cheers

Have Mk5 bilge & lavac pumps which get checked/cleaned annually, plus one complete set of spares. Have no idea how old the existing innards are(although I suspect probably quite old), but I have had the boat for nearly 4 years and no problems so far.
Our sport can be expensive enough as it is, so if it ain't broke why fix it?
