Henderson MkV Bilge pump replacement ?

Hi,

Sunrunner has a Henderson MkV Bilge pump but it is not working properly and I want to replace it. Based on some searches of this thread I asked ASAP if the BP0535 or BP0527 sanitation pumps are an exact form and fit replacement but didn't get a sensible reply.

I've attached pix of my pump, they are taken from behing the vertical cockpit side and the pump handle protrudes out the other side where the opening is covered by a circular rubber seal. It's a b*gger to get to to undo the fastnings so I can't very easily do it on my own, otherwise I'd remove it and compare it to the modern types. For this reason I don't want to try the service kit either - when I have someone here I just want to replace it like for like with no faffing around.

So if anyone can tell me for sure which modern pump will be an exact form and fit replacement I'd be grateful.

If the body of the pump isn't damaged I really would try the service kit. It's an excellent pump and it fits the holes and hoses. A new one may not.

No, I should have said in my post that the current Henderson Universal is not compatible with the through-wall pump handle of my current pump.

Thanks anyway, but I don't want to do that because it costs me the better part of £150 to visit the boat up in Wales each time so I just want to swap it for a new one without any faffing about if the problem's not fixed by servicing (as I've heard does happen).

So I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me whether any of the current Whale pumps is an exact form and fit compatible replacement ?

I am metaphorically in the same boat as you - I had the same idea, re replacing the old Mk V as it is now 20 years old.
And a service kit costs almost half what a new pump costs.

And after the old unit stopped working, I changed the top hat type valve inside (after previously replacing the main diaphragm a while ago, and it worked again, for a bit, and then died..... hence even more keen to get a new one.

So I bought a nice new Henderson Mk V when I was in high latitudes in June, and it didnt occur to me that the design of the pump might have changed in the last 20 years...... but when I returned to low latitudes and compared the old and new pumps I found that it has, significantly, and it is totally different to the old one, and not compatible at all.

Although I think I can mount the new pump where the old one was if I also add an extra mounting bracket - but the hole in the side of the cockpit locker will then be wrong, and will need to be filled up and re-done.....

Maybe they should have called the latest version the Mk VI or VII (or Mk X?)......

(I would also like to know if there are any compatible replacements)

To be completely clear, I believe the previous owners have already serviced the pump and it didn't work. I am not going try that myself, either I will replace it with a new one or I'm just going to rely on the currently fitted electric ones and a bucket.

I'd prefer this thread so be restricted to the question regarding the compatibility of the sanitation or other alternative pumps, sorry please understand I don't want to sound tetchy.

The thing with these pumps is that the location of the operating lever is at the base and I don't know if any other makes make them with this layout.A service kit will have to work unless the body is broken.These are very simple and sturdy designs.What exactly is wrong with yours?I would say that the previous owners didn't fit the parts properly.

I had a non-working version of the same pump. Turned out not to be the pump, but an air leak into the inlet hose. Have you checked that both inlet and outlet hoses are clear and airtight?

in line (180 degrees) on the pumpbody. On the foto's they look not in line (but on 135 degrees or so)?????

I agree with that. I have three of them on my boat and the all have the pipes opposite one another.

Yes, I have emailed the manufacturer but no reply as yet...

I agree with that. I have three of them on my boat and the all have the pipes opposite one another.

The angle of the pipes at 135 or 180 degrees would not affect my installation at all, it's just the mounting pattern and handle placing which is crucial.

Hi Boo2,

My names Sheila and I work for Whale. I've spoken to our Customer Service Representative, Aidan, who I think replied to you this morning regarding this issue but I thought I'd answer the question for everyone on here too.

The pump you have is an old Henderson Universal pump. Unfortunately we have changed the design of the pump to create the Whale Mk 5 Universal. However, after speaking with Aidan, the BP0535 Mk 5 Sanitation pump will suit your installation. This pumps have 4 individual feet that can easily rotate to suit your installation and the rocker arm and handle come out of the face of the pump rather than the side to ensure easy use.

I hope this is able to help you and you are able to sort out your bilge - looks like good weather this weekend for sailing!!
