The yard went overboard with a needle jet last year and stripped most of the antifoul back to GRP. I was going to prime with International Primocon but just discovered that Hempel undercoat is a lot cheaper here. Information from people who stock Hempel is that it is fine to use as a base for Cruiser UNO. However, they know I only need primer and don't stock Primocon. I brought fair bit of Cruiser UNO with me so would prefer not to buy primer and antifoul.

Anyone seen anything from Hempel or International regarding mixing brands? Any long term experience of Cruiser UNO on top of Hempel primer?

Local prices seem to be ~180 Euro for 5l Primocon or ~£120 Euro for 2 x 2.5l Hempel primer.

It'll be fine. I just paid £88 for 5l of factory fresh Primocon from my local High St chandlers. If I ever sail down to Spain, I know what to stock up with!

Generally I've found that provided the solvent used for the paint is the same, the paint will be compatible. Primocon is thinners no 3 I think.

Primocon uses no.3 thinners and Hempel primer uses Hempel's thinner 08231 or 08111. I'd need to dig out the composition of these and even then, you say it's only a general rule. It doesn't sound as anyone has specific documented information on the subject. Thanks anyway.

I have been using Hempel Underwater Primer and overcoating with International UNO antifouling for several years without adverse effect.

Not much help to you but most AF work on most primers. Most primers are pretty similar as are most AF. One glaring exception is Micron 66, it might be similar to Micron 77, which will react with most primers, they seem totally incompatible but you do not find out for about 3 months (and Micron 66 is expensive!). The incompatibility results in blisters and the AF falls off. The problem might also occur if you overpaint Micron 66 onto other AF, simply do not know - but I'd prime. Micron Extra is fine with most primers. There might be other AF with 'exotics' in them like Micron 66. I'd do what you are doing and keep asking around.

I only know because i did some small panel trials.

To spread your reply base I might post on the Mobo section - there might someone there who can help.

Result. I also spoke to a guy who'd used Hempel under International A/F without a problem. Even better, I found a nearby Hiper Pinturas with stock at 44 Euro/2.5 litres. So that's about £64 for 5 litres vs. £87 (or £130 for Primocon) from "Nautical" suppliers. Thanks for the advice.
