Hempel dissolving foam roller?

Hi all,
I'm coating my deck with Hempel non-slip deck coating and I think it might be degrading the foam mini rollers. They lose their spring and start shedding foam after 10 mins or so. Is this the paint dissolving the roller or just poor quality rollers? Should I use fabric ones instead? I imagine they might impart a less even texture.


The other issue I had this eve was that as I was rolling, very fine cobwebs of paint or dissolved roller (not sure which) were appearing in the air, visible when drifting under my head torch. They settle and seem to disappear into the paint. I am heating the boat and working under the cover but wonder whether it's still too cold? About 8 degrees C this eve once heated.

Any advice from those more experienced would be much appreciated.

Use a solvent resistant roller

Make sure you are working above any minimum temperature specified in the product data sheet and that the surface temperature is above the dewpoint

Foam rollers generally break down under the effects of paint solvents. Hence the antifouling on parts of my hull is of foam sandwich construction?

Similar here, i use Screwfix gloss rollers for antifoul, the foam ones are knackered in a few minutes.

The cobwebs or gossamer are an effect of using rollers, any rollers, for a paint that dries quickly. The little drops of paint flying from the roller dry and form filaments which then fly about. I have noticed the effect mainly when applying antifouling.

Thanks all for the advice. Velour rollers were far better and the bits of foam from the previous coat flicked off without causing any damage thankfully. Third and final coat with velour last night and the end result looks great. Far better than the toplac and beads I used last year on the aft deck.
