Hi - I painted my Trim Tabs over the weekend with Hempel boot top racing (1st coat) and ran out - digging around the house today I have found a tin of Trilux 33 boot top.
I am wondering if anyone knows if Hemel boot top and Trilux 33 boot top antifoul are compatible so I can just put a second coat on the trim tabs or is it a trip to the swinderly.

Can I ask why you refer to chandleries as "Swindlers" .

They have been in decline now for many years now for many different reasons.
Primarily, because customers can go direct to manufacturers / wholesalers.
 
Yep similar situation last season due to not moving about much plus the hot weather at the start of lockdown.
My question is - would it be ok to use trilux 33 boot top straight on top of hempel boot top?

International have an antifouling compatibility chart on their website
ITYWF if you refer to it that Trilux33 can be applied to Hempel HR but a light wet sanding is recommended.

Not really.

I am not involved with chandleries but I know people that are . Like many retailers, they are having a tough time at the moment. You clearly do not understand how the business works or you would not call them swindlers.

Perhaps you could let us know what business you are in.
 
Commenting on Long Keeler's post involves some thread drift, a lot of thread drift. Apologies it is a Forum :)

There is a long running undercurrent that devices for the marine industry are priced higher than for other industries, an example being items that are used in both caravans and boats. It is difficult to understand why, say, a freshwater pump should cost more for a boat than a caravan or motor home (or horticultural requirement), same device. 'Our' exposure to these items is at the retail end, ours are called chandlers (I don't know if there is a name for a shop selling stuff for caravans). Chandlers 'support' any price differentials and must know of their existence. Chandlers are having a tough time because of eBay and the likes sometimes the eBay price is significantly different to the chandler price. I believe genuine Rocna anchors cost less on Amazon than in the chandler. If I am prepared to wait I can buy genuine Ronstan Low Friction Rings from China at a fraction of the price in a chandler. Similarly I can buy soft shackles from China cheaper than I can buy the equivalent length of dyneema. You too could buy the same soft shackles or LFRs. A chandler could buy the LFRs direct from the factory that Ronstan use, have a decent mark up and be cheaper than Ronstan possibly sell them wholesale. But this would involve the chandler in much effort.

It is really difficult to be sympathetic to chandlers under these conditions. Chandlers are not unique, look at any high street and the retail outlets that have closed. Industry has to adapt or die.

My chain winch that I use to test anchors, came direct from China. My load cell came direct from China. my coating thickness meter, to measure gal thickness, came direct from China (and is the exact same meter as used by galvanisers). My new climbing rope, for snubbers, came direct from China. But I do have the meters calibrated here. I do test the ropes (because I can). My high speed rasps are on their way, directly from China. I would not pay 'retail' prices for the coating thickness meter, load cell etc here but without them I could not tell you the holding capacity of an anchor.

Rocna anchors cost much the same to make as a Delta. Have you ever compared the prices - someone is making a lot of money (Lewmar because they have been selling lots but........?)

Sailing magazines have the same issues partially being undercut by Forums such as this one (to which you contribute). If you and everyone else stopped providing the information free of charge we would need to buy the magazines to answer our queries. Wallets talk and count. If the magazines stop paying me for my articles, because the magazines disappear, I will not buy the kit nor do the research and there will not be another generation of Cox', Neeves' and Thinwater's - the writing is on the wall.

Swindlery might be a bit strong - but there is an element of truth (plus some acceptable, to me, flippancy) behind it.

Yes you did - customers can go direct to manufacturers / wholesalers ---- Why go to that bother of going to a manufacturer / wholesaler when they maybe a chandlery on site ???
its basically saying why go to a supermarket over the corner shop --- the supermarket is cheaper however the corner shop maybe handy in times when needed at a moments notice.
like going to B and Q for a m10 bolt and paying £s as opposed to going to a Nut and Bolt suppliers and paying pennies.

I needed 2 trim tab anodes and trilux 33 (not related to this thread) - rang the nearest to my boat chandler after I ordered online for click and collect this Saturday to be told there not open on Saturday till after April 12th but open Mon to Fri - cancelled order went to a wholesalers in Portsmouth will have it hand today.
I'll say no more.

Vyv Cox has had details of his tests on 'C' links on his website for some years. Vyv recommends 'C' links from Crosby. Without exception this Forum recommends the purchase of Crosby G209a shackles for the primary connection between anchor and chain.

Now.... list me chandlers who stock Crosby 'C' links, or Crosby shackles?

I know, I know - its an American product.

List me chandlers who support Knox Anchors.

How long has the UK be metricated? I wonder how many chandlers advise customers, or even care, that CMP/Titan Black Pin shackles are to an imperial, not metric, specification. I do know - the difference between short tons and metric tonnes is not large but........

I wonder how many chandlers have a test certificate for their anchor chain?

This is a business group having a tough time, breaking their backs to encourage and support customers

Ignoring costs (or profit margins) .... I wonder why they are having a tough time

In response to the original question, yes you can paint one over the other.
Painting hard over ablative might not be a great idea but it was a long time ago that antifouling did not mix with each other.
I have had a lot of leftovers over many years and never yet had a bad reaction mixing one brand with another..
 
I used to antifoul customers boats for a local mooring operator between tides.
Ranged from the cheapest a/f to most expensive.
I aquired a lot of nearly empty cans. Often used to mix it all together, come up with some very odd colours and use it on my boat. Pretty sure I mixed ablative and hard
The only one that didn't like mixing with others that I came across was tbt based.
One year I had nothing to mix it all in so did the waterline in the colour I had most of, then painted lots of different coloured areas all over the rest of the boat. It certainly drew some attention. Orca camaflague ? ?
Thought it would be interesting to see how each one performed.
Next drying out I was surprised to see the whole boat had an even covering of weed.
Now I buy whatever is the cheapest including out of date as I've not yet had out of date that does not work as intended
 
I would add that is my experience from boats around the portsmouth area.. Others may have a different outcome in other parts of the uk, or abroad..
