It has occured to me recently that certain forumites will jump through hoops to help others- as long as they of the opposite sex. But when it comes to helping a fellow male, they are much slower to respond, if at all.

No names mentioned, but one helpful chap drove to the boat of a lady, to sort out the electronics, even having to tolerate his car breaking down on the way back. Another day, he is more than willing to offer his assistance in resolving the same lady's windlass problems.

Try sending him a txt message on a Saturday afternoon, politely asking for help with the PC to GPS wiring - what happens? Absolutely nothing. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Mmmm. Maybe I should create a new user with a girly name, to increase my chances of getting some real help.

Aargh, must have my mobile on 'ignore this user'. Never saw your message tho' someone's opened it up for me. What do you mean, pin 3 is earthed? Not from a PC it isn't. Do you mean your reading 0 Volts?

/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Didn't know you could 'ignore this user' on txt - a useful feature!

I didn't really mean earthed, but was trying to keep the txt very brief.

When I put the wire coming from pin3 of the D-type into the NMEA-Seatalk mux (can't remember exactly which pin), it freezes the GPS position and clock on the ICS6 which is at the chart table - in other words, it is dragging down the GPS.

So I put my multimeter between pin 3 and 5 on the back of the PC, with nothing connected to it, and as you say it was 0 volts. THen I did a resistance test between the two pins, and there wasn't any - ie 0 ohms - that is what I meant by earthed.

So where do I put the Tx Data, ie coming from pin 3, onto the NMEA, to allow my to upload waypoints from PC to GPS? Having read the destructions since trying it out, I am not sure Maptech can do it anyway - the Garmin 152 GPS is not one of their options. So I have used the NMEA-generic option, which is working fine for Rx data from the GPS - it showed that I was on the right pontoon in the marina, which was a relief! Next step is to give Maptech a call, to find out if I am barking up the wrong tree ....... or just barking!

Thanks for any help, Tom, as usual. Sorry for the sarky post to get your attention!

If you are using a Seatalk NMEA bridge then you prob have the GPS output connected to NMEA in and you cannot also connect the laptop via the bridge. If you try to do this, you will bring down the GPS as described. There's a separate RS232 out which you connect to pin 2/5 of PC to see the data, but no RS232 input.

What you need to do is drive the GPS direct from the PC. I don't know the G152, but on my 128 I can connect PC pin 3 to the NMEA input (brown wire) provided my Yeoman (or any other plotter) is disconnected.

Maptech should work fine in NMEA generic mode provided the Garmin is also set to NMEA. Waypoints look like this:

$GPWPL,5048.88,N,00056.74,W,MARKER

Field
1 $GPWPL GPS Talker, WPL sentence
2 5048.88 Latitude of Waypoint 50 deg 48.88’
3 N Latitude North (or South)
4 00056.74 Longitude of Waypoint 0 deg 56.74’
5 W Longitude West (or East)
6 MARKER Waypoint Identifier

thanks Tome, I had assumed that I could put the data straight onto the bridge, clearly not.

I will leave it for now, until I get the plotter in the cockpit, per my portrait/landscape post last week. Finally decided on the C-series as long as I can fit it in a pod under the spray hood.

Talking about pods - having seen the prices, I might just get into manufacturing them!

Or at least 'that's worth a bottle of the finest having saved my PC and GPS blowing each other up'. Think I'll ignore all posts from this user til he canges his name/gender and manners/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh. I get windless problems. Shall I get my other part to contact him? Perhaps he could whistle some up?
