Help with wood

Hi all, I need to identify wood that the companionways on Sultan are made from, simply enough task I thought just take a piece to the local timber yard and ask them. No chance, some have no idea, others have a chap that has worked there for years and knows all there is to know, but he only works part time, and never on a weekend. It is a hard wood, that much I know, but is there a web site that has clear photos to aid identification? I suppose I could cut off a small piece and mail it to 'Cuchie' but this seems rude.
Any help would be most gratefully accepted.
