Help with Volvo raw water pump please

If when you take the pump apart,you find that the shaft is scored(feel with a fingernail) all is not lost..you do not need a new shaft or a costly sleeve.
Simply make up a couple of washers from shim material..5-10 thou should be enough and fit them behind the new seals..this will move the seals past te worn bit on the shaft and allow the lips to bear on a fresh surface.

Hey, Sounds good and I don't know if the shaft is worn but what is shim material and are washers easy to make? I know, I hold my hands up, tug my forelock and admit to being the village idiot.
