Three years ago we had a new raw water pump (the one that drives the impella) fitted because the pump was leaking.

It has now started leaking again. (Volvo MD22 engine)

If I remember rightly the problem with these is that the rubber "O" ring in the pump either fails or comes out of place causing the leak.

The last new pump I bought was about £190 pounds but I believe you can take them off and put new washer or "O" rings in. I think you need to put it in a vice as the shaft is tapered and knock it out.

The above is from something I was told but I cannot really remember.

Has anyone any knowledge of fixing one of these pumps?

Any help is gratefully received.

When the seal gave up the ghost on my Volvo D1-20, it wore a groove in the shaft too. I thought about grinding the shaft or packing the seal a little bit but finally opted for a SKF Speedi-Sleeve. The sleeve was about £25 but a replacement shaft was mega-money. Engine hours on the sleeve are getting close to the hours of the original shaft and seal, and all is well so far, touch wood.

Having taken the old spare water pump apart I dont think I am going to be able to do it to my leaking pump without removing the pump from the engine.
On the old pump there were two rubber washers and getting them out was a pain.
At least if I get it off I will be able to clean it all up and clean and check the hoses.
Don't suppose anyone has got a exploded diagram?

There were not two rubber washers, just the one. The inner spring usually found in the seal had separated when I tried to get it out.

With marginal experience and engineering ability I managed to do this.
You can get a re-furb kit from Volvo Parts or similar and do the job in a couple of hours.

If I was doing it again rather than replace the seals, bearings and the shaft, i would just replace the seals.

1 seal or 2 that is the question.

The pump bobc posted is a belt driven pump and the top pics on vyv_cox is a engine mounted like mine which is driven off the cam shaft of the engine.

A belt driven pump only needs 1 seal to keep the water from leaking past the shaft. An engine driven pump need 2 seals one to stop the water leaking and the other to stop the oil from leaking. not that always the lip of the seal must face the fluid that is being sealed in.

I did my pump that was leaking water with only 20 hours on new pump purchased new from jabscoshop. Water seal was fitted the wrong way round from new.

If when you take the pump apart, you find that the shaft is scored(feel with a fingernail) all is not lost..you do not need a new shaft or a costly sleeve.
Simply make up a couple of washers from shim material..5-10 thou should be enough and fit them behind the new seals..this will move the seals past te worn bit on the shaft and allow the lips to bear on a fresh surface.
