help with volvo md1

MD1 head gasket is different from MD1B. Different bore diameter. I couldn't source one either alone or as a set. Engineer in troon found one gathering dust under his bench, but nobody stocks them anymore.
Are you sure? I have an MD1B and am lead to believe the only difference is that the "B" has a reverse gear. I think it states that in the manual.

Apart from horsepower inlet and exhaust systems suspensions piston and blocks oil system fuel systems cooling system options of electrics and gearbox pretty much the same or in other words don't mix them up a few bits are interchangeable

Photo of gasket - i'm guessing the apertures in the exhaust port at the engine should replicate the gasket?

Nop......this gasket is used on different engines with different configurations so DO NOT DRILL engine parts to match as it may not be supposed to match especially the centre port. Also ensure the gasket is fitted the correct way round.

The head and exhaust gaskets can be obtained from Thailand and this is the web site of the chap who appears on Ebay from time to time. Seems he can do all sorts of classic cars too!

Hi Vic ( I was chatting to you about SeaWyches) Head Gaskets can still be found. I boughta "decoke set" from "Keypart" a couple of years back, not cheap at £63 but beggars can't be choosers. I then Hydraulically Locked the engine by putting the exhaust manifold gasket on the wrong way round! Difficult to do but I managed it! I then found an American guy in Thailand (on ebay) who made them in copper at $35 well worth the money and posted quickly.
To the OP, if you are going to take the head off I will try to contact him if you want,PM me. Peter.

You're right it's included in the decoke set . Not listed separately though

I have dropped an e mail to Keypart to ger confirmation that the head gasket is included in the de coke kit.

Hi Gavin, I know I'm coming in to this discussion late but here's my take.

Cold start jammed on.

Injectors worn.

Very slack tappets

It would struggle to start if the valves were burnt. this doesn't mean they wouldn't benefit from being lapped in, so do it if you need to take the head off. If the exhaust was badly coked up, the engine would benefit from a decoke anyway.

The cold start ought to be relatively easy to check. If it sets when you press it, it's almost certainly not jammed on. This doesn't necessarily mean it's working properly of course, but it's a good enough starter for 10.

I'd get a local specialist to do the fuel pump and injector as a pair. I use a company called "Panda" in Fareham. I don't know where you are.

Reset the tappets anyway.

A smokey exhaust always indicates too much fuel or too little air. If you can start the engine, it's got compression. This doesn't always mean the inlet valve's opening enough.

Thanks Topcat

Upon investigation I found that the cold start was stuck on and I have now freed this - hopefully this solves the problem.

The engine starts very easily (even with the hand crank).

I'm now minded to get the injector serviced and maybe a decoke.

Am in Argyll - the local Volvo dealers are in Glasgow

Gavin.
Before you go further and set up for doing the decoke as well, the lifting of the cylinder head and replacement of the head gasket may alter the clearances of piston crown to head; this is normally set using shims at the base of the cylinder block, of varying thicknesses, to achieve the correct gap, and entails lifting the block off its studs to do so each time to add or remove shims.
Unless you've incurred broken rings somehow and have to do it, avoid altering this aspect.

A full overhaul of the head and valve gear may require a valve spring compressor, and new oil seals on the valve stems, to prevent oil leaks from below.

Further still you may alter the decompression lever clearance to the valve rocker, such that it either partly decompresses or alternatively does not, and its a devil to get right!

Hopefully you won't have to do any of these tasks, but read the manual first!!

Either go to crinan or fettes & rankin at kip or just get the injector serviced nearby not sure that glagow vp dealer would know what an MD1 is
Remember there are no washers fitted under the injector

Thanks guys!

On the basis that the engine has been faultless for the 10 years that I've had the boat, with nothing more than an annual oil change - I think I'll get the injector serviced locally and leave the rest well alone
